I think it would be good to have a male therapist to work through these issues and to develop trust in a man who does not get angry and does not hit you and does not yell you. Otherwise the painful experience with one man causes you to believe certain things about men in general and that must be very limiting. It would seem obvious that a professional, no matter their gender, would not get angry, hit, or yell, and yet you are wondering if they would. Getting over this belief might be highly beneficial for you and the breadth of your social connections. A good male therapist can really make a difference in your life after establishing a sound therapeutic alliance.

I don't think you'd need to worry about a male therapist being abusive. That said, I've never picked a male therapist, I think because of anger I had (have?) toward my dad for being so passive about my mother's emotional abuse of me.

Regrettably we often repeat the pattern, choose partners who resemble family members in worst possible ways.
