Since I started menopause, I gained 20 pounds in less than a year! Is this normal or not?

What can I do to stop it other than counting calories & excercising?

Do any herbs help? Did you gain any weight during menopause too or not?!

Since starting peri menopause I notice the weight is harder to shift even though I’m still exercising (I’m on a med which also puts weight on).

I’d be wary of herbs or supplements that claim to help although there seems like a lot of advertising targeted for this.

One of the things I’ve heard is not eating in the evening, having 12 hours between last meal and breakfast next day.

Some people say short bursts of intense exercise works for them too. I’m not sure myself though.

I’m just trying to be mindful of food intake (limiting carbs especially) more salads kind of thing, and mixing up my exercise.

i find exercise to be the biggest help, especially aerobic exercise like water aerobics and no one can see your body!
Yes, huge salads with dark greens are great!
Covid sheltering to protect my ex with emphysema and my dog having a sore leg from Valley Fever have made exercising hard to go back to.
I have returned two treadmills because I doubted I would use them.
I have never enjoyed any exercise and stuck to it except water aerobics.

I am not on menopause but thought I would suggest Ozempic, which has helped me shed 20% of my highest body weight in less than a year. I am 52. I had gained weight on meds, and one of the worst culprits was Zyprexa. With Ozempic, I started losing weight even while I was still on Zyprexa, but several months later my pdoc switched me to weight-neutral Latuda, to my delight. I also do personal training (strength training). I weigh the same as 10 years ago, but my body shape is far better thanks to strength training.

I have talked to both medical weight loss doctor and internist and they concur that for weight loss, you need strength training. Aerobic exercise is good for mental health benefits, but not for weight loss.

Good luck counteracting the weight gain! It is possible.

I had heard that too recently that you need muscle to burn fat. This is what I meant when I wrote mixing exercises up, ideally you need a balance of type of exercise, it also stops you getting bored. Picking something you enjoy is important too.

Hiw much weight did you gain? I heard about thise tips too. Thanks. I’m usung a calorie tracking app now & have list 5 pounds so far but I can gain weight instantly overnight if I’m not careful, ugh!!!!

I heard that about Ozempic, but isn’t it expensive? We have no insurance now. How much weight did you loose? I heard that yoi gain everything back & more after you stop taking it.

I heard that too. I’ll try lifting weighrs again. I need to find an affordable gym with no hidden costs first.

I gained about 4kg (I’m in UK just checked and that’s about 8-9lbs) like you I find my weight can fluctuate quickly, which makes me wonder if it’s fluid retention at least partly.

I like swimming too, it’s maybe not the best fat burn but I think it’s good conditioning and toning, I’m swimming once a week. If you have a bad knee can you manage stationary bike? Those are good for short burns!

Sorry to hear that. I csn go for a slow walk. Thankfully my knee doesn’t hurt anymore ever since I started taking joint vitamins & a bunch of other vitamins!

I’ll leep everyone uodated on my orogress. I’m nervous about going to the Drs. this Tuesday as I’ll be getting the results of my bloodwork. I hope that it doesn’t show anything bad & that I’m not diabetic! If I am, it’ll ne tyoe 2 diabetes.

For me the simple trick is to eat less and lighter smaller meals. I gained a lot of weight too. I don’t particularly think about it but I know just eating less does the trick

Yes, those two things are super important: doing what you enjoy and preventing boredom.

My weight fluctuates. Yes I probably need to lose 25 pounds but I don’t think much about it. I have very fast pace tiring job and long commute so when i get home and want to eat so I eat because I am very hungry by the end of the day. When I am off work I eat much lighter because I am not starving at the end of the day and can plan my meals better

Yes. It is expensive, $300 from a Canadian pharmacy if you do not have insurance. With insurance it costs me $25 per month and the insurance pays the manufacturer over $800.

You can gain the weight back, but I intend to take the medication for a long time, until even better medications become available and then I will switch. It is basically a lifelong treatment, but that makes sense because obesity is a chronic condition that can worsen if left untreated. But I am lucky to have insurance coverage.

I have lost about 20% of my body weight: I started at 276 lbs and now fluctuate between 216 and 221 lbs.
