I'm trying to find out whether my period is screwed up. There's this website called YourDays.com where you can mark when your period starts and all that fun stuff (NOT). This is what it says about irregular menstrual cycles:

How do I know that my cycle is irregular?

If your cycles are occasionally irregular, you should not worry too much. However, if your menstrual cycle frequently occurs more often than every 21 days or less often then every 35 days, or if a period is missed altogether, your cycle can be considered irregular.

Should I be concerned if my cycles are irregular?

An occasional irregular cycle or missed period is usually not a sign of a medical problem. However, consistently irregular periods are often an indication that you have irregular ovulation, or are not ovulating at all. If your cycle is irregular, you need to be evaluated by your physician.

Oh great. Apparently my period is irregular. Now it's day 32/28 and last month I got a normal period BUT it was over a month late. Wasted a crap load of pregnancy tests.

It's not like I miss it though, I would be more than happy if the whole thing stopped altogether :P But I'm kinda concerned because sometime in the future I might want to have children. Maybe when I'm about 30 hahaha.

Does anyone here have this? How is it treated?

I've been dealing with this issue my whole life. My cycle has never been predictable, except when I'm on the pill. Perhaps a low dose pill is what you need to keep your cycle regular.

yeah, the pill can be terrific for helping regulate your cycles.

do you have any pain around your period or around ovulation more in particular (a couple weeks after it starts)?

just curious...

Yeah... It is probably worth getting the doc to run some tests to try and figure the cause of your irregularity. Treating that directly (if possible) might allow you to conceive more readily than you otherwise would (if / when the time comes that you want to have kids).

There are a variety of reasons for irregularity.

I have an irregular cycle sometimes. I'm not 100% sure about this - but I think it has something to do with the egg having trouble travelling down the fallopian tube. It gets stuck (hence cramps around ovulation). The more that happens... The more stuck eggs prevent the next egg making it to the womb. So... The solution (for me) is to go on the pill (which prevents the release of the egg). That way... Less stuck eggs mean that if / when I'm trying to conceive the more likely it is that an egg will make it down ok to be fertilized...

Though... I'm not sure that that is the cause of irregular cycles... Worth finding out, though.

hey all, thanks for the replies.

i don't have a thyroid problem, and i used to have some pretty bad cramps a few years ago during my period, but they are not bad anymore.

yesterday it started feeling like my period was starting but so far, it hasn't. occasional slight discomfort in my lower back and abdomen.

if the 18th was 32/28 then today is 41/28.

yeah, i really need to have this checked out.

I had irregular periods my whole life until I started taking a thyroid medicine. I used to sometimes only have three or four periods a year, except when I was on birth control pills. I always tested within the normal range for thyroid functioning, but it was the high end of normal. A doctor who was covering for my usual doc suggested I try a low dose of Synthroid to see if I felt better, depression-wise, with a lower TSH level. I was amazed to have regular periods for the first time in my life off the pill.

So if you haven't had your thyroid checked, see if your doc will check it. If your TSH is at the high end of the range, and you experience mild symptoms of hypothyroidism or have depression, you might ask your doc about trying to boost your thyroid.

Good luck,

gg

my period started yesterday. hehehhe. the cramps were really bad but i took naproxen for it and fell asleep and it helped.

Glad you're staying on top of all that. Funny, mine started yesterday, too. Bleah. About the thyroid, though...see what your TSH value is. If it's in the normal range but it's maybe somewhere between 3-6, you might benefit from bringing it down to about 1.5 or 2. That's the level where I feel the best and I started getting regular periods. Before going on thyroid meds, my TSH would be around 5 something, "normal", but apparently too high for me.

At least that's what helped me. Not sure why, and maybe it's just a fluke.

Hope the cramps go away.
