hair lightening or wax? or maybe other? what do you do with your tash if you're unlucky to have the dreaded dark hair, fair skin combo

I have dark hair, olive skin and it looks just as bad.

Done properly, waxing isn't as bad as you might think. Spend the money to have it done at a salon. It's a lot more painful if you try to do it yourself! Most salons won't charge more than $15, and some less than $10.

I finally went for electrolysis. The cost for the first treatment depends on how long it lasts, and then it's $15 or $20, usually, for remaining treatments and touchups. I go like once a year now -- it really does work permanently. Make sure to find a certified electrologist, and ask about their equipment, as it differs. The newer machines are less painful than the old ones. They'll put on something to numb it a little before they start, though.

Hope that helps!

I use a combo of waxing and tweezing. Waxing doesn't really hurt and after a while I noticed that the hair didn't grow back as much or as thick. My problem is more on my chin/upper neck - think mini beard, and it comes in really thick and black - very noticeable. I'm constantly tweezing. I'm thinking of shelling out for laser hair removal at some point.

thanks that's helpful
and candy, I keep thinking of trying electrolysis, but bit nervous... 'cause (oh I'm embarrassed I can't believe I'm gonna say this) ... 'cause I have fair skin and dark hair I have a bit of hair beside my ears (my side-burns ) so I really wanna get rid of that, but I've never wanted to try waxing it incase it grows back stubbly... so my hair is permanently down so they don't show, but it's annoying
*sigh*
so complicated being women.... men have it so easy

phew, am I glad I found this thread....I thought I was the only one dealing with this (at least it feels that way when no one else around me is). I have a small patch of hair on my chin...I have no clue where it came from or when it popped up (tho I do remember a few years ago the lady at the salon asked if I wanted my chin waxed...). I have always been slightly hairy (hair arms and stomach)--I think I have Mediterranean origins. The people I show it to say it's not that bad or they can't see it, but it's clear as day to me

I am really considering waxing, but I am scared I the hair is going to grow back thicker and uglier than it is now.... I wasn't expecting to have all this hair until I was old enough to just not care...Does waxing make the hair grow back finer? I read mixed reviews about waxing...but i'd definitely rather not shave and laser and electrolysis is not an option due to lack of funds...

Maybe I just need to bite that waxing bullet. I have facial hair due to having PCOS..Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. So I have a little beard and side burns. I have a little 'stash but it's not as noticeable so I don't worry too much about that. The main thing I worry about it my chin I hate that and shave it every few days. The most embarrassing thing I've had happen to me is my dad telling me it's not lady like to have facial hair and that I should go use his razor and take care of it. I wanted to shrink under the table. Anyway maybe I should try waxing...are you sure it doesn't hurt to bad?

I pluck. Constantly. Keeps it under control on my chin and around my eyebrows. Last night I plucked out the dark hairs of the lower part of my sideburns... they were so long I just grabbed them with my fingers and pulled them out while chatting... I'm thinking about going in somewhere to have them shape my eyebrows and sideburns once, then just maintain it with plucking. I'm not really sure what either should look like... I just guess at it myself.

LOL Now I know what you were doing when you didn't respond in chat right away!

I tweeze a lot, too, mostly my chin and double chin. eeewwww I've tried waxing but have to go too long inbetween and I'm uncomfortable with the little bitty hairs showing until they're long enough to wax, so I tweeze constantly, too.

It's a known fact, though, that waxing doesn't make your hair grow back stubbly and thicker. It's supposed to eventually get almost unnoticable. I've always done it myself and the worst part is just getting up the nerve to YANK. There's some stinging after but it rubs out right away. LOL

Suspose if I was going to change anything, I'd go for the electrolosis. Didn't know it was so inexpensive. Thanks, Candy!

Ladies, STOP with the waxing! Get an epilator Does the same as waxing, it's cheaper, you can do it at home and there's no mess.
Yeah it's a torture device blah blah, go get one. :P

I just started using a hair removal creme made for facial hair, it's not as painful as the waxing strips( I tried them once and decided that I would rather be hairy). Though I do think I am going to start having it done professionally because I have really messed up my eyebrows this time so I hardly even have eyebrows now.

I don't have a facial hair problem, but I would recommend threading. I get my eyebrows threaded (it is an Indian method, an alternative to waxing which gives the eyebrows a much better shape). It depends on availability/where you live because typically, Americans do not do this, usually just Indian women. Anyway, you can get all your facial hair threaded, which tends to work better than waxing.. I would just say that if you don't have a high pain threshold, don't go for it. It is different than waxing because waxing is just one pull-- threading is constant pain until it's done. To me, it's not that big of a deal, but again, it depends on your threshold.

And there are some epilators that have a cooling system to make it even less painful. I swear by it, I'm never going back to shaving, waxing, tweezing or cremes. I epilate my whole damn body! xD

I have fair skin and dark hair. I'd used tweezers for years because I didn't like the idea of spending money for waxing just to have to go back and do it again. I saved up for a long time and I'm now investing in laser hair removal. I'm so glad I'm doing this, I've had great results and its permanent.

Would you ever buy one... a laser hair removal thing, or go to a salon (more expensive, but they know what they're doing).
I'd be embarrassed about asking for it done in a salon.

I want it done though

Oh threading... my friend told me about that. She gets it done also. She said that they basically loop a piece of thread around the hair and pull it right out. I think that with tweezing and such you just kinda break the hair off whereas threading gets the hair plus the follicle. So every time you do it, it lasts longer and eventually, I think it can become permanent

For those who are waxing, what type of wax products are you using? I used some once but it didn't seem to work properly so I tweeze and use a razor which is not good because I have a few bumps... I might consider the epilator though for Xmas!

I have PCOS, too, and was scared to death to wax my chin the first time. I almost had a friend go with me to hold my hand, literally. Instead I mustered up the courage to go alone and found that it didn't hurt anywhere near as much as I thought it would. I have pretty sensitive skin, though, so I tend to get more red, bumpy and blotchy than others I know who have waxed facial hair, so you might want to avoid having any social plans afterward until you know how your skin reacts.

Definately go to a professional to have it done. I don't think the ones you can buy for home use are as strong and seems like it might be a little dangerous, but just my thoughts. I wouldn't just go to a salon either. I go to the plastic surgery clinic that is associated with my primary care doctor. I asked my dermatologist about laser hair removal 'cause I figured she could give me a professional opinion about what would be safe and effective and she recommended the place that I go to. Don't be embarrassed people who do this type of thing have seen it all. My first 2 times I was a little shy, but now I just lay down and I'm in and out of the office in 15 minutes (by the way I'm doing bikini line, chin and upper lip).
