I wouldnt be concerned if its the first day see how it goes if it sorts itself out within the same day I would think it would be fine, however maybe a quick call to the Drs wouldnt go amiss.

ok... ty. this usually happens at the very end for several days after the period stops - never at the beginning or in this amount. I really don't want to have to call the dr - sooooo embarrassed. and as it's Saturday, I'd just have to talk to who ever the on-call practitioner is.
well, today is now day 2 - typically my heavy day. so far nothing. I imagine if i called my dr, she'd say stress is a factor (did have a *very* stressful event). So maybe it is nothing. Was pretty panicked yesterday about it.

i think id only really be concerned with it if it was accompanied by some sort of pain other than just regular cramps. i ended up having PCOS but i would go months at a time bleeding and it was always with excrutiating pain. so if its just a different color i wouldnt worry too much.

Most doctors have an on-call number so you can reach someone after hours or on the weekends. It beats a trip to the urgent care or the E.R. if you can get help over the phone. My guess is that stress is just causing a weird cycle but I have absolutely no medical knowledge. I've just had the dark brown weirdness at the beginning of my period while under stress but no pain.

Please let us know anything you learn.

While is is always a good ideal to get these things checked out when you see your doctor or are having your yearly exam... I would say that what you are experiencing with the dark blood at the beginning of your period is normal - its your body getting rid of left over blood fro the month before.

Tumnus, Rhap, thanks... so far I've only searched online - not called the online dr. I like the votes of confidence that everyone thinks it's normal. I tend to have a lot of weird symptoms that always end up "fine" or due to stress, and get tired of calling in all the time. so we'll see what tomorrow brings before i make any rash moves.
thanks for the replies.

Kiya - while my system could never be termed "normal" I do get this pretty frequently, several times a year I think. I've never really put it down to stress before, you may be on to something there. I discussed it with my doctor years ago but I do not recall exactly what the explanation is, but it is "normal." There are times when I've only had this and it's been a 'mini' period with a real one following a couple of weeks later.

I would bring it up the next time you go in to see your doctor though.

its just called breakthrough bleeding but the main thing is to know the cause of it. my thing is, if theres EVER pain with it.....you get it checked out. because that sounds like what i used to go through and it ended up that i had over a dozen cysts in both ovaries and a polyp in my uterine lining. im not trying to scare you but if that was accompanied by pain that stopped you in your tracks i would call someone. better safe than sorry. and thats such a sensitive part of your body that i wouldn't take any chances y'know?
