What exactly is the difference? I want to ask my pdoc about it but have a hard enough time talking about my current issues he knows about without bringing up problems about that time of the month. I know that I become a total bear to be around when that time of the month rolls around. The symptoms of my many Mental health issues come up to the surface and I just become a stark raving lunatic. As soon as I have been a non smoker for 6 months I plan on asking my GP for the pill to hopefully aid in problems surrounding that time of the month but I know that he probably won't give it to me unless I have been a non smoker for that long to prove that I can stay quit.
So does anyone know of a website I can visit to see the difference between PMS and PMDD? Jan __________________ I appreciate long walks especially when taken by people who annoy me. Noel Coward |

PMDD is something that is meant to be 'more severe' than PMS, but neither are included in the DSM-IV as disorders. PMDD was last labelled in DSM as something requiring further investigation.
i have spoken to my pdoc about it - a fair few times, actually. i think he might have even monitored my cycle on the sly (gross!). but he seemed to know a heap about it, and when i spoke to my GP she agreed - the pill *can* be useful in helping it, but the best treatment for PMDD is an SSRI, so try that as first avenue therapy. something about the pill containing something in it which is linked to starting PMDD in the first place. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PMDD for info on it, and they have links for further info at the bottom of the page. |

As someone that has suffered from PMDD for over five years I can tell you that the difference for me was that I wanted (and tried) to kill my self one week out of every month - I dreaded my monthly as I knew (felt) that I may not be living before the week was out.
I now take Celexa for my Mood Swings & PMDD and it has been a life saver for me..... Sarafem is also good for PMDD. * * * * * Mayo Clinic: http://mayoclinic.com/health/pmdd/AN01372 (click on all links) |

I've had the same exeperience with PMDD as Rhapsody has had. The times that I've actually tried to kill myself where the day or so before my period would start. The pill works exetremely well for me in controlling my symptoms. I've been on the pill now for just over 19 years. I freak out if my doc ask me if I want to stop the pill.

ooh - it's a relief to hear other people get suicidal too. when i told my pdoc, he said he was sure i wasn't exaggerating or anything, but that he hadn't heard of it being that extreme before.

Thank God I'm not the only one here who has attempted suicide before my period starts. I thought I was the only woman in the world that does stuff like this.
I have been dx with bipolar 1 and PTSD. I don't want to go on birth control pills because in the past I have had increased heart rate and terrible head aches. Are there blood tests or other tests to decide if I have PMDD? |

No - there is no blood test to determine PMDD... Dx is done through talking with your doctor concerning your symptoms and emotional set backs during your period... your doctor will help you determine if it is regular PMS or that god forbidden PMDD that effects 10% of the female population.
