My bf has been jobless since we moved almost 3 weeks ago. He has filled out a ton of applications but not even an interview yet. Well he got a letter in the mail today regarding a position he applied for at the university. It is the affirmative action thing asking his race, ethnicity etc... and says his application will be processed whether he returns it or not. He has applied for several positions at the university but has gotten this letter only once for this specific position. Would you take this as a coincidence and they just randomly send out these letters to applicants? Or would you take that as a good sign that they might be interested if they want more information from him? On one hand I feel like this is probably just a random letter they send out because its not required. But at the same time, he is so freakin depressed from not finding a job that I want to tell him its a good sign just to cheer him up and get him going a little bit.

He is freaking depressed about not finding a job within 3 weeks?! Perhaps his expectations were not realistic?

I'd go with you, that it's a letter they send out once, to cover any/all applications from that person. There's probably an application file for him, kind of like when you apply to attend a school and have bits and pieces you have to have done/send to them? So the letter is probably just a piece of that?
