My fiance has mild aspergers and is having a substantial amount of trouble finding a job. He would apply for SSI but he is concerned that once on SSI, he wouldn't be able to apply for certain jobs and no longer qualify anymore...so he is hesitant and concerned. Will SSI limit your ability to have/get certain jobs in the future, or does it not matter?
I was told by a friend of mine who is on SSI that as long as it's not for a physical condition that it should be okay...is this the case? |

From my understanding as long as you make under a certain amount you'd still get SSI not sure what the cut off income is. But yeah basically if they decide you are making enough to sustain yourself they can revoke the SSI...I imagine it could be challenged or appealed. But as far as I know it would not limit the kind of work someone could have just so long as they don't make above a certain wage....though I realize some jobs are generally more high paying so those jobs could disqualify your fiance from SSI.
I do know Aspergers Syndrome is considered a disorder one can get SSI for...I have that as well(at least as far as I know, haven't gotten an official diagnoses yet) I was one of those autistics they missed when I was a child. But I am also applying due to having depression, anxiety and PTSD and maybe even other issues not entirely sure. Seems I need my head sorted out but have nowhere to begin. I am also worried since I have applied for SSI but haven't heard much back from them that if seeking some low pay seasonal work would interfere with the process. But yeah I know its more making above a certain income level that can interfere with SSI not what the job is. |

I work and I'm on SSI. I have a part-time job, so if he is considering on applying you can't make over a certain amount depending on your state. But you don't have to tell your employers that you receive SSI. They might discriminate against you, you know how it is. I didn't tell my employer when I got hired that I receive anything, just that I had to make a certain amount per month to keep my health benefits because he doesn't offer health insurance. Kind of a backdoor way of me keeping what I need to survive.

IceCreamKid, it depends on what you have...best thing I would say is to go see your doctor and get all the paperwork in order...
Hellion, the process usually takes a long time, and typically you don't get accepted the first time...personally, this is my second time applying...the first time I applied, they said my condition wasn't life threatening enough, and they were very rude about it...however, seeing as my conditioned has worsened, and is making it nearly impossible for me to work or go to school, I reapplied...I hope you all get what you need from it though! |
