so i volunteer my time at an elementary school helping children that need that extra attention. i was told by one of the students in the class (5th grade) that, " because i didnt go to collage, thats y im a volunteer, cus i cant find a real job"

i couldnt believe that he said that to me. i just blew that off until i was walking in the hall and as i was passing by him, he says " so hows that collage degree going?"

i know kids can be cruell and im not trying to let it get to me, but it was a big blow to my self esteem. i did let the teacher know what was said. so im thinking he took care of it.

but as i was growing up i was always told that your not smart enough, good enough. the reason i volunteer is because i have the time to do it. its not because i cant find a job. idk, i guess i just needed to get that off my chest.

Wow, I can't believe an elementary-school kid would be that cruel. I have a feeling he's heard relatives talk that way about someone in his family. I know it would be hard not to take it personally, but seriously, he doesn't really know you and your circumstances.

Alas, he did hit a sore spot with you. If you can shrug it off, then he won't be able to get his jollies. (I know--easier said than done.) You know why you're doing what you're doing. And not everyone needs a college degree. I know this statement sounds mean, but just because people have a piece of paper from a college doesn't mean they're very intelligent--and some of the smartest people I know don't have college degrees!

Kids do not have that filter yet, my fiancée sis is a teach assistant, a kid said 'she's not a real teacher she's a fake teacher!' I know u didn't take it personally its good that you let it go n laugh it off. I am precepting at a pedriatric hospital; kid said out loud to someone that "you look like you need to work out". Also, toa woman with Cushings, has facial hair, kids walks by "ew that woman looks like a man!"

kids say the darnests thing
Thanks for this!

I thought parents should have taught them better by the time they get into school! Of course, pardon me for sounding cynical, but even a lot of adults now are just plain mean, IMO.
Thanks for this!

i belive that some or even most of the attitudes that kids have come from there parents. i tell my kids if i ever catch you being mean or a bully, u will have a punishment, and regret it. maybe more parents need to be like that, idk
