I've been there 21 years.
I'm 55 and very concerned about my marketability.
Pretty worried

55 is the new 30. Take advantage of any compensatory services they are offering, if any, and look around your community for re-training opportunities. When you start interviewing, remember you have an opportunity for a brand new career, and it is exciting! I'm pulling for you.
Thanks for this!

That must be quite a shock after 21 years. Your loyalty to the company over the past 21 years gives you an edge that some candidates cannot bring to the table.

I am in your age bracket and got a job in a matter of weeks. Jobs are available but you have to do a lot more work to get an interview. Get as much feedback as you can about your resume and understand how to dress for an interview. Things have really changed. Find out as much as you can about salary too. I am not making a dime over what I made ten years ago. However, salaries are not as low as the news makes them out to be either. Good luck. Please let us know how you are doing.

I have been laid off twice in the last four years due to budget cuts on state and fed level. Thats what happens in the human service (Mental Health) field I guess. Make sure you TAKE CARE OF YOU through your job transition. You might go through some grief stages which is "normal" just remember TAKE CARE OF YOU. Look at this as a fresh start. Thinking pos will bring pos. Good luck on your job search and if you need some tips or just need a cheer leader hit me up with an e-mail. TAKE CARE OF YOU
