I got laid off in July and my unemployment runs out in a few weeks...unless I am approved by the "extension fairy" (which you have to wait and see in my state, it happens right up until your unemployment runs out...gee, thanks for the added stress). I have been applying for jobs (per unemployment rules) every week and nothing but one phone interview which went nowhere. My father has been helping to support me and commented that I am going to have to lower my standards (um, I was hardly making much before with my not-so-useful English degree).
But to be quite honest, I don't think I can work all day. I have severe depression (can't find the right med yet), anxiety, insomnia, and OCD. Being surrounded by people all day sounds horrifying. I was on short-term disability for awhile at my last job, and even there I had flexible hours and could cry at my desk all day if I needed to. I really don't know what to do. I am going to make a psychiatrist appt. because I know nothing about any kind of disability my state offers if you are unemployed, if that even exists...he seems to think depressed people benefit from having a set schedule and people around them...maybe some do, but I am WAY past that as a comfort zone. I feel nauseated just typing about this...nauseated and terrified. I haven't even talked to my therapist about it because I just feel so hopeless.

I hope you do talk to your therapist about it. I'm sorry you are getting laid off. Thinking of you! I hope maybe because you were on it short term before maybe the process will be quicker and work ou better than you think.

Hi,
I would see about applying for disability anyway. See about
getting an community attorney who will only get paid when you win
I got one here in Seattle.
It takes awhile to get on disability I know I'm on it.
I would suggest trying to get a temporary job at your local
temp agency. Apply to more than one. Perhaps you could
get on at a job that's part time.
A lot of places prefer to hire temp's it saves them money.
That's what I did for awhile when I was looking for a job.
If your pretty good with bookkeeping or with accounting
that's one job where you would have minimal contact with people
while on the job.
At least that's what I've read online.
Good luck

PS
One more thing I forgot to add.
Make sure you start saving up
all & any documentation on your
depression to include your psychiatrist
that your seeing.
When you apply for disability you will
need documentation & plenty of it.
Good luck
Thanks for this!

I'm sorry you have to go through this. It can be very frustrating and confusing. I would suggest going on welfare until you can get the disability. Also apply for medicare, and try to find a community mental health clinic. If your income is low, they will work with you on a sliding scale for treatment. I know there are resources out there. You may have to do some digging around, but you can find them.

Try not to get too over whelmed. I am in a simular but yet some what different boat. You have an English Degree which is an awesome accomplishment... Kuddos try not to let my spelling tick you off though lol.
First off maybe finding a job online might be a good idea to look into ??? It sounds like you are used to being busy and working so that might be a good fit working online from home.
Remember you have several options... it has helped me to write down all of the different option I have to get income such as... food stamps, Public Assistance, Section 8 for housing for Rent assistance SSDI the list goes.
Basically stay busy, do your home work and call around. I used to work in the human service field so if you are interested in some tip's please feel free to in box me and I will try to forword them to you.
Remember to BREATH and not get to overwhelmed with the OMG What if's, I'm so screwed thoughts. You got this. Good luck and if there is anything I can help please inbox me and I will do my best to help out.

I know that I can't work all day because of problems with bipolar sleeplessness. You could always go to vocational rehab and see if they can find a job that accomodates people with disabilities or head to the local soup kitchen to get free meals or join a church and attend the activities where they give out free meals while you wait to apply for SSI and have a disability hearing.
