Recently I wrote here about deciding whether or not to go back to a retail job that I feel unconfident at. I decided to go back because I realized that I was avoiding my fears, and that it's an internal issue that would crop up at any job.
Well I gave my boss my availability and he was super nice. We had a great conversation, and I felt excited to go back. But I just got offered an internship and I needed to change my availability just a little bit: instead of being available for all hours on Friday, I am only available for the evening now. I went in today and wrote this on a note because my boss wasn't there. Usually everyone writes notes about this kind of thing so that he can remember, unless he happens to have a spare moment to talk. As I was writing the note, he walked in. Another manager asked me what I was doing (while my boss was in the room) and I said I needed to talk to my boss about changing my availability (which I think he heard). Then I said hi to my boss and he said "hi" in an unexcited tone (which he always uses for everyone I guess, but I read into it and feared that he was angry that I was changing my availability). My boss went into his office like he always does in the morning, and I convinced myself to just leave him the note rather than going in and talking to him. In my defense, he was talking to someone in there and I didn't want to interrupt, but I could have waited. Now I can't stop my thoughts from racing because what if he knows I was too chicken to talk to him? I was afraid that he would be annoyed and disappointed... my anxiety is always high at work and I worry to no end about not being perfect and not being able to please everyone. Do you think he'll be even more angry since I didn't talk to him in person? Or is this just a small thing that I shouldn't even be worrying about? Thank you so much for reading this! |

I wouldn't worry about it. Your boss has so much more on his mind than you can imagine. He probably wasn't even really paying attention to you. The note was a good idea because it will remind him of what he needs to know. Relax, enjoy the job and internship.
