So my schizophrenia is pretty bad. I tried school but it was a bust.

I looked into careers that have the flexibility I need and apparently there are absolutely NONE aside from self-employment.

Well what am I supposed to do for work? I am barely scraping by month to month on a measly $470 SSI check and the only "skills" I have for self employment either never or only very rarely pay at all, much less pay a living wage.

I am pretty good at writing poetry, but it is impossible to make money there. I suck at writing fiction so that is a no go. Also general writing, while I am good at it, is a no go because I can't spend all day, every day writimg and writng for nothing, hoping that mine gets picked over another (like ghost writing, I have had that suggested NUMEROUS times and it has always failed miserably).

Also, because I am 26, I am often expected to have a portfolio for any of these liberal arts and I don't have one. I don't want to be 30 when I start a career, I have neen working on trying to have one for 10 years and I can't bring myself to invest my time in something that has little to no chance of going any place.

I can paint decently, but art is one of those volatile fields that it isn't worth trying to do. I already have anyway and that never went anywhere because nobody wanted my originals and nobody could afford the cost just for me to break even for commissioned works.

I love animals but there is no job with flexibility that pays a living wage that has anything to do with animals.

I am kind of at a loss for what to do. Most articles I read about successful schizophrenics said they were self employed. Well, unlike them, I am not lucky enough to have rich family to invest in me getting a business started and I can't work enough to get the money to do it on my own...

Have you tried getting help through vocational rehabilitation? If not google 'vocational rehabilitation' along with the state you live in, and should come up with the aggency and links you would need. for example in ny state it is called acces-vr. you can get help with services that are tailored to your needs, in order for you to get a job that can let you live better. Good luck

Above link is my post in the thread, re a job you might be able to do from home. I know someone who does it, just starting for 4 months, makes $350 a month part time. Very flexible, in a way, no dealing with people.

About writing, are you in the USA? If you look at the working from home thread on Something Awful (a comedy website with good discussions) you can find the way to make money writing, from people who are doing it. There will be info there about my friend's job as well. A good resource. Sometimes the SA website is blacked out, though, unless you pay to register. Other times it is open to anyone. You'd have to keep checking, I think.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
