I am a Certified Management Accountant with an MBA and more than forty years experience in Manufacturing Accounting. There is virtually nothing that can happen in a factory that I have not been involved in at some level. There are those out there that consider me to be an expert in Cost Accounting and Cost Systems. But I have been out of work for more than two years now because I have, unbeknowstto me, become "overqualified".

I know that there is a firm out there somewhere where I could be a major aid in helping them to achieve better, more efficient throughput through eliminating constraints, reducing non-value added activities, better inventory control, and more accurate, relevant management reporting. But instead, I sit here at home. How depressing that is!

Ouch - two years is a long time to be seeking work ... very hard on your feelings of self-worth. I realize you probably need the money but your soul needs fed also. I hope you can find something fulfilling to do until you find employment.

Just a thought ... could "overqualified" translate to "we don't want to pay this person what they are probably worth in terms of experience and work ethic"??
Thanks for this!

I ran into this some with positions I was applying for. I do not by any means have your experience though! I really do agree with the above that employers sometimes see qualifications and are thinking about how much they will have to pay as a salary. Maybe apply for higher up positions that require more qualifications?

I know what you mean. I have a phd but my job does not pay enough to pay back my student loans so I am looking for a second job and I keep getting turned down because I am "overqualified" for the positions. I will take any pay and any job, I just need the cash. I have started cheating at this game and I'll let you know how it goes - I have changed my resume to make it look like I only have a bachelor's degree. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this gets me some interviews...
