I posted the same thread in the Autism forum, if you want to delete it you can. I didn't realize until later that I had posted to the inappropriate folder.
I had a cleaning job at a veterinary office. Well I sweep over and over because I want it to be clean and besides, there was nothing else to do. So the vet and his wife kept telling me I have a demon possession (I'm an atheist so I don't believe in that stuff). And I kept saying no, no, I have Autism and OCD, so that's why I do it. I said if they want to fire me fine, but it's not any demon. They kept arguing with me about it saying evil spirits were on me. His wife said that my behavior is very abnormal compared to other people she hires. I act different because I have Autism though. Different than NT people that might work there. I got upset and started crying. Then they said they were going to rid me of the spirits so I left right away and called my friend to get me away from that place. They also asked me to name my medications on the job application. I do not think this is legal is it? My friend and I sent a complaint to the civil rights place but what else can I do since it's wrong? Also when they were questioning me they asked if I act this way because I'm on drugs, and I said NO, do a drug test. But they kept asking me. __________________ |

I am sorry you had to deal with people like that. I think it is best you left that place and look for someplace else to work.

Oh my god, I am so sorry you were treated like that. That is horrible and inexusable behavior on their part, what awful people they are. Wow. If that happened to me, I would have walked out the second they said "evil spirits were on me". They're the crazy ones. They need to be reported. Could you report them to anyone else, maybe even the police? I don't know if that's a good idea, but what they did was not right, and it is definitely discrimination. Never go back to that place, and if you have to, bring a close friend or a family member with you. Don't go back there. File a report, I'm not sure where you would do this, but maybe call your local county office or something. Is there an HR department you can get ahold of? Or contact the city clerks office or something?

Oh my, horrible treatment indeed!
Do you have a copy of the application form on which they requested the names of the medications you take? |

So you sent a complaint presumably to OCR (office of the civil rights of the department of labor) - what did they say? Did you get a complaint ID... an acknowledgment of the complaint and contact info of the investigator? What did you get from the OCR? Also, depending on where you live, the dept of labor in your state needs to be notified, as some states provide more protection to the workers than federal laws do.

It was OCR that we filed the complaint to, we just did it today so I haven't heard anything yet. Im worried they won't do anything but I hope they do. I also saw the vet and technician operating on a dog's mouth with no gloves. Disgusting.

The vet must be seriously weird. And completely reckless.
You can report him for both violations, but you would report to different branches within the dept of labor. Also, you can report to whoever licences the vet. I am unclear as to whether you are still employed by the vet's office. ? Keep a copy of your complaint to the OCR and wait a bit to let them respond. They are a gov't agency and might be understaffed. |

I was employed yesterday when this happened, but I'm definitely not going back. So I guess I quit.

No no no, this is not good. You must go back to work and have them give you a pink slip. If you simply do not show up without an excuse, it would be harder to prove their wrongdoing later on. Things would get messy - the employer did something wrong and you did something wrong. You should not quit like that. If you simply cannot tolerate this kind of attitude, then you need to write to them saying that they created intolerable working conditions, listing everything in detail, and, send a copy of that letter to OCR. I can help you write a letter based on what you have said on the thread, but please, do not quit without fighting for your right to work in decent conditions.

That vet sounds nuts. I worry about the animals in his care especially how there are people into torturing black cats around Halloween...

But first, do you have the vet's email address - meaning, would you be able to send the letter before Friday or not? Cheers - things will be OK. Your skill - cleaning thoroughly and meticulously - will always be in demand. |

OK, I am sending a PM - in your state, there is a whistleblower protection law. So if you notify the authorities about the operation done without gloves and then get fired, that will be illegal. I have not looked at what remedies are available, but hopefully this will not be an issue - if the vet gets scared enough, he won't fire you but instead back off with his ridiculous demands.

As a fellow atheist, don't just walk away from there as it seems that is their plan. Get some legal advice. Consultations are free to explore the possibilities. You might get some monetary leverage to carry you through to the next job. Good Luck.

I would at least consult an attorney. They seem to be among other things creating a hostile work environment to get you to quit.
