This needs to be said b/c of the implications. I work at a retail book store for very little money (you can prob guess which one). I very much enjoy working there as the customers are awesome to talk to (very rarely you do get the cranky one but few and far between). My co-workers are also very cool to work with. All this offsets the fact that I work nights till closing and make just above minimum wage. Except for when I get a "talking to" for not soliciting membership to a teenager. I am pretty sure this is illegal and have even gone as far as to look at our privacy policy online. (as we collect info for these memberships as well as charge a fee)

I am no lawyer but I'm pretty sure what that consists of is breaking the policy. I talked to a manager (other than the one who "talked" to me) Manager 2 said she would talk to 1 about what happened. I have no idea what to expect when I go to work today. But I will tell you ladies and gentlemen I DO NOT feel comfortable soliciting memberships to children and teenagers especially when it is presumably illegal. I wanted to warn all those out there about this sort of activity while I have some sort of protection from retaliation. Thank you for letting me vent/warn you about some of the practices going on these days.

I don't think being a member of a book or other store group and getting a discount is illegal for teenagers? They pay their $25 cash for the year and when they buy books get a discount. There's nothing wrong with that? No one has to accept/buy a membership (I do not have one), it is just asking them if they want one. It's just a loyalty thing so they shop there instead of somewhere else, like grocery stores and other places have. None of the information a teenager could give is unknown, not like they have bank accounts or credit cards or anything. No one has to give information they don't have/don't want to. It's just a choice thing, not a forced or invasion of privacy thing.

Some more clarification getting their info is part of the membership process to sign up.
