I had a second interview yesterday for a good job, so now the process moves to a background check. I am very nervous right now because, although a criminal search will come back clean, my consumer profile is very poor. I'm a total wreck!

Yes, they're going to pull my credit report, which is very poor. I'm terrified that this process will stop cold when they check my background.

I know what you mean about the fear when a consumer/credit report is run. Good luck to you. Post how things turn out! Cat

I think I might be upfront with them about what they will find and why your credit is poor. Blame the economy if you had a financial set back at sometime and let them know you are working hard to get your credit back up. Good luck and do let us know what happens.

I would be honest, but not necessarily tell them everything. The type of job you are applying for will tell you how important it is. A bank will be fussier than a retail job, for example. In my job it didn't matter, only my criminal background, which was only to make sure I could be trusted with cc and checking info.
