I applied, interviewed and was offered a part-time cafeteria job working as in light food prep and as a cashier.

I was told first, 1 day and maybe 2 and then 25-30 hours. I am to hear from my supervisor tomorrow about "trying me out" this Thurs and maybe Friday. And then, if I work out, I can work on the following Tuesday. Aren't ALL jobs a 90 day probationary period?

I don't want to work where I don't even have any schedule that is at least a little regular. I realized this morning that I don't even know what my rate of pay is..

I don't want to take any job and then quit when a decent job comes up. Mary just sounds sort of noncommittal.

Any thoughts?
Thanks for this!

Maybe when the supervisor calls or emails you could pin them down on some of the details i.e. schedule and pay.

Think what questions you want to ask before you start working. Just doing that is a good idea - good luck!

Yeah, sounds shady. Don't work for free so they can "try you out".

I just called Mary and turned down the job; it just sounded shady/sketchy/uncertain to me.

That was probably a good call. Did they even try to give you an explanation on when/how much you would be paid?

Nope, they never gave me any idea of pay or anything else. Her info she did offer to give me was wishy-washy at best. I'm relieved that I turned them down.

I have had to do like a "shadowing" at certain places before. They will do that sometimes before they hire to make sure you are capable of doing the job. Sometimes that is paid sometimes it isn't. Maybe that's what they are having you do?
