I had 4 interviews so far last interview just waiting to see what the decision will be for the state job. I am still thinking of getting a 2nd job to supplement my income for the time being; so I can implement my own goals. I feel like I am gonna end up with something lower than what I am wanting; the other main problem is these employers refuse to accommodate my primary job schedule with their schedule(s) which I figured out why they do that they want me on board with them part time and have me leave my current job - not until they offer full time. I work 2nd shift so I do have open availability during the week except for Fridays.

Sigh. This quarter is very slow compared to the numerous calls I was getting last year. I have been applying quite a bit through the college district been turned down and one job I was counting on closed without hire! Still waiting on the other positions. There has been zero negotiations on the recruiters' side and their clients are so rigid with everything which makes things very hard.

Does anyone have any tips/advice on negotiating scheduling accommodations while you already have a job but you need a 2nd one for supplementing income? Any advice on not taking something lower than what you're worth/capable of/or might feel cheated?

Unfortunately getting a job is all about what you can offer them, not about what they can offer you.

Persistence is all - good luck.

It works both ways, remember, the employer is selling themselves too about their company what they can offer, etc - something that is never taught I had to figure that part out on my own. Think about it when you go in the interview, you do ask closing questions gather info on the company and the manager(s) themselves. Two way street you can choose not to hire me and I can choose to apply elsewhere.

Are you saying I am suppose to have the 2nd employer overlap their schedules with my primary job? you didn't really answer my question - this is about negotiating and how will it fit my open window so I can still go to my primary job for work and have a 2nd job at the same time. Like I said, I am not leaving my current job until I am offered full time then I will put in my 2 weeks.

I feel they shouldn't overlap your primary schedule with job 1 knowing that job is your primary employer. I don't trust a lot of these contract work that's all the recruiters call me about too much hope then you are let go for whatever dumb excuse the clients come up with. I just need a weekly paycheck to keep money coming in...

Perhaps I have misunderstood. I was thinking that you had or hope to have a primary job that is full-time. In which case clearly a second job has to fit in round that, and if it pays less well so be it, at least until you can find something that offers more.

But perhaps you have a part-time primary job and want another part time job to make a living income. To do that you might well have to ask one or both employers to later your hours. You have to come up with a good reason, from their point of view, why they should do that. What can you offer to make them sweet? Perhaps you are very valuable to them in which case the prospect of losing you may make them amenable.

It is unclear if there is any scope for flexibility in your current job. If you have to be present for core hours then an employer is unlikely to be keen to be flexible.

If on the other hand there is is scope for flexibility in the nature of the business, then you could ask your employer what it would take to be more open to changing your terms and conditions. Perhaps there are peak periods of work that you could cover - this is flexibility they would value.

Just some thoughts. Good luck.

Like I said I work 2nd shift 3pm and Fridays can vary depending on how low the staff is. I have open availability in the mornings (which will suck if getting another 2nd part time because I use that time for appointments and errands before work). What I can offer? Yea, that's when negotiation comes in. I have told past recruiters that I can only do let's say 8-1 or 8-2 in the mornings then I need to leave to go to my primary job and I got told this job is 8-5 I said within full time or part time hours? The recruiter said full time I was like wtf you said it was part time!

It's difficult as scheduling with my primary job changes way too often with such a low *** staff makes it almost impossible for a 2nd job me and the few employees are temps and we all know temps don't stay long since nothing in my dept will ever be full time.

I still keep thinking of having a side business tired of going through these employers listening to the bs and all of this unnecessary waiting.

A side-business sounds good - even if it does not pay that well at least you are in control.

On the employment front, a nice thing about the internet is that it can put you in touch with people who might value your particular skills and experience even if they are not local. You might find this a profitable avenue to explore.

True. The thing is I want out of my part time job so tired of working nights barely have a social life would like to do more cooking at home and don't like cooking after 7 when I get home. Too much last minute **** at my job it drives me up the wall if I could walk away from the job I would but I don't have a **** load of assets to do that.

It is still something to look into, so will have to look into options. Is there anything specific to know about starting a side business?
