Hey guys, conundrum here. I work at a restaurant where the manager doesn't care, the coworkers have no team mindset, and the pay sucks. But, hooray! I found another job. The problem is my new job is working over night and they wanted me to start immediately. It pays a LOT more and has fewer hours. So I figured, okay, I'll put in my two weeks and just work mornings at the restaurant through the end. But then it turned out to be much more difficult than I thought...it's been more than 72 hours since I've last been home, because I've just been going from one job to the next. I work tomorrow. But all I can think about is sleep. I work every day this week with three overnights in a row, and then I'm going straight from work to an out of town road trip on Saturday that's been planned for months. I really don't know if I can make it through the week...or even to my old job tomorrow. Should I just not go? Call in? I already had to call in 2 weeks ago when I was sick: they'll know I'm not sick. Should I just talk to the manager, tell him I'm sorry, but I won't be able to complete the two weeks? Should I just try and tough it out? Some background on me: I have bipolar and in the past have had minor mental breakdowns. A major trigger for me is lack of sleep/not being at home. A warning sign is my chronic migraines, which I got one yesterday. I'm scared I'm going to make myself sick. But I don't want to screw anyone over by not showing up for scheduled shifts. I just don't know what to do, please help :-(

Is the job you're quitting a full time job with benefits? Would you lose any vacation pay accrued?
If not, I say just talk to the manager and have your next day be your last day. Yeah it's bad to not complete your 2 weeks, but if this is causing you stress AND depriving you of sleep it's not good. It will only hurt your new job. It would have been nice for them to allow you 2 weeks instead of starting immediately. |

Nope, just a college student waitressing gig at a chain restaurant. No benefits whatsoever.

I would call it quits the next time you go in. Just say your new job had you start immediately and you aren't able to juggle the schedules.

So do the shift tomorrow and that's it?

Remember most employment is at-will. Chances are, they might let you go if you talk to the manager, but it's better to let this take a backseat for your health.

I agree with what's been said. Resign from that waitressing job via a talk with the restaurant's manager and focus on the night job and your studies.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Got up with another migraine today, I wouldn't have been able to go anyway...I'm going to call and explain. I feel bad, all my coworkers are going to hate me forever, but it's just not healthy

Did the transition from the job go okay? Coworkers will get over themselves after a time. It's better for you to do what's good for your health.

My manager was pissed, but I haven't heard anything from coworkers. I'm guessing I won't be seeing any of them again. :/ after a couple of days though I know it was the right decision. I got some studying done, cleaned the house, and actually got to see my boyfriend and get some sleep at a decent hour. Maybe it was selfish to quit, but I'm someone who literally never makes decisions for her own best-interest...I was raised to put others first. I think once in a while it's good to just do something that's best for you.
