Personally I dont discuss my income for quite a few reasons...Im not rich by any means but I make a decent amount for a single women with no kids. One of the reasons is becuase people tend to attach your income with your image. I work on a military base and you would be shocked to see how many people walk around thinking they are the "hot stuff" because they have a federal job. I dont carry that stigma with me at all...infact you would never know by looking at me that I work a federal job because I walk around living life like the average everyday person. If I were to tell people where and how much I make...im dont make the most...tons of people would ask me for money, question why I still drive my 10 year old car, shop at thrift stores and so on...I dont need that in my life. There are military and civilians who make way more than me but I have more save up becuase of my choices.

Im just very private when it comes to my money and income...I even lie at times so it seems like I make less than what I make to throw people off so they dont get me to spend money or judge my lack of spending.

Too many people judge you based on how much money you make. I dont make a lot but its enough just for me and I still live below my means and have more saved up than someone making twice my income. Since I do live below my means people still wonder why I dont blow my money like I "should". Its rather annoying and for anyone who is in my shoes...its just best that we keep our incomes to ourselves and lives our lives the way we want.

As the middle class disappears and society bifurcates into have-nots and have-alots I'll bet it will become even more taboo to disclose one's income as it will become more and more difficult for people to keep up appearances skating on credit, and the 1% will not want to reveal their assets and make targets of themselves for a larger and more angry underclass.
