I do temp work during the summertime. Well, today I got a temp job with a company that fits my career goals. The only problem (of course!) is that the temp job is NOT in the department that has current openings for jobs that fit my wheel-house of skillsets, work history and career goals. The temp job is for a totally different department. Why does this always happen to me? The wrong doors towards my career goals, always seem to open, but the doors I need to walk through towards my career goals are always closed.
Now, obviously, when the temp client had a representative interview me, I didn't tell him my plan, which is to do the temp job 100% great, that's for the wrong department completely, so that I can pay my dues, network while I'm there with people in the department where I want to work, and basically earn myself a permanent position in the right department without being fired. I need career advice. How do I accomplish this side-step from the wrong department to the right department, that is currently advising literally the perfect job for me, right now. I could apply for that job, right now. Should I? Or, do I risk it never been available again, and spend the next 6 months of the temp job, doing a great job in the wrong department. There's no room for me to do an internship while i"m at a temp either. And when I mentioned to the interviewer that I have a natural ability to see opportunities where most people can't, that seemed to rub him the wrong way. I have a very entrepreneurial spirit and have had success with creating things from nothing, because I had a vision for it, and then followed steps to make those things happen. Of course, I haven't always been successful. I mean, I'm a temp. I'm not fully-employed. But this company; this company is exactly the type of company that will give me the career opportunity I've been looking for, trying to make happen. But the door to that opportunity, leads to the wrong department through the temp job I've been hired on to do. Has anyone out there been in my shoes? How did you make temp situation work in your favor? |

Hello cielpur I think the only thing you can do is accept the job and do the best like you say your going too. If it's a 6 month position that will give you plenty of time too possibly work on getting a full-time position. I would look at it as a positive temp job. I'm not clearly understanding the other department has ever hired temp employees. If so keep in contact with the temp service about that.
