Hey. I wanted to ask if you know or have experience about this. Although I could stay at home and bum money from financial support, I'm not gonna be happy living as a homebody, doing nothing nor earning nothing just because of my difficulties.
I probably can't participate in typical 8 hours a day 5 days a week work routine although I wish I could manage it, so I've been thinking of self-employment. Competition will be harsh though, regardless of field. So, i thought to ask, which skills would be most crucial for a self-employed person with mental illness or other factors that limit their performance unlike for a healthy person? Can you recommend me articles, videos or other resrouces on the subject for example? And what's your honest opinion on the subject: Can a person with mental illness be successful in business/compete with normal people, or are we just "stuck" being (I hate saying it this way but that's how I feel about it) "lesser people" whose only hope to ensure better quality of life is to get a wealthy spouse and live extending their ego? (sorry about the probably stressed tone in my text) |

Hm-m-m-m... well... I've never been self-employed exactly. But I was a more-or-less professional person when I was working & I think there are similarities. (By the way I was a vocational rehabilitation counselor.)
![]() ![]() I also noted that you wrote you could probably not participate 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I think most self-employed people find that they're spending more hours per week working ... not less than would a person who works for someone else. Not only do you have to do whatever the work is that you're involved with, but you also have to keep track of the finances, & do things such as send out the billings for your services, deal with late or non-payers, handle complaints, order & maintain supplies & whatever else comes up. ![]() I know there are other members here on PC who are self-employed. It would be great if some of them would reply to your post. They would have first-hand experiences to share. I don't know what skills you have that you think you might be able to offer as a self-employed person. Obviously you have to have some skill-set that is in sufficient demand that other individuals or companies will want to do business with you. I would certainly not want to say that a person with mental illness can't be self-employed. However my personal thinking would be that if you feel you could not handle being in someone else's employ, I find it difficult to imagine you would be likely to find success as a self-employed person. ![]() ![]() ![]()
