I have applied to 10 jobs this week. I'm hoping to go back to work. I'm currently on disability. One thing that has me uncomfortable is that 2 of the company's asked if I was on disability. Why do they ask that? Isn't that private information? And how does it impact you as a candidate? I could see if I needed assistance with my job that it might be helpful, but I have a mental health disability. I was stressed out just applying for work. I'm not even sure I can handle going back to work. I'm just going to base my decision on how relaxed or stressful these interviews go.

If you are in the US that question is illegal and you should report them to the EEOC.

Don't ever mention that you have an illness ever. Nothing needs to be explained to managers and coworkers ever. It is none of their business. Lie if you have to, just don't tell them.

Seesaw what about if they ask during the application process? I applied to a large craft store chain and on the online application, after I filled it out, it directed me to a survey asking all sorts of questions from if I'm disabled to if I receive food stamps and welfare and if I'm a veteran. I think it was for governmental purposes. Can't remember if it said it's anonymous or not. It seems pretty standard with some applications. Could it be a state thing?

I’m trying to figure out what to tell my job when I start applying. I am a trans man but I’m still legally female. So I don’t even know if I have to put my gender on my applications or if they do that anymore. I really don’t want to have to tell work because I doubt they’d keep things a secret. Word gets around incredibly fast in retail. Even if you only tell managers. I just don’t want to have a tough time because of my coworkers.

I don’t believe job applications have gender questions. Of if they do, they must be an option of not disclosing. You aren’t obligated to disclose your gender.

You could request a specific pronoun to be used when referring to you.

We have trans students, we and other students refer to them by a pronoun of their choice regardless of what their legal documents say. It takes time to get documents changed. No ones business what’s in their documents

Put nothing in the application. When offered a job tell them to refer to you as a male and he. Done.

It’s illegal for them to blab that your documents still say you are legally female. I call my coworkers by a pronoun they want me to use and I’d never ask to make sure their legal document matches. Legal document is for tax and a pay check purposes. That’s it

I found a retail job from 5AM-9AM that I’m thinking of applying to when I move. I think those hours are perfect although waking up that early has been a problem in the past with my old job. And that was when I started at 6:30. I’m gonna have to lower my morning Geodon back to 60. I’d really prefer to find a job with 4-5 hour long shifts. I think most companies do that now for part time anyways so they don’t have to pay them for a lunch. I found a few places in the area I’m moving to that are hiring for their backroom departments.

That sounds like a good idea. You can adjust to an early shift. Are you moving out of state?

Yeah out of state.

I hope my bosses aren’t insane. At my last job they were nice although they could get crabby but very rarely with me. I think it only happened twice. I was never yelled at though. I only had one rude customer in the 2.5 years I was there. My store manager could be so subliminally passive aggressive at times I was actually quite impressed by him. I am that way myself at times and no one ever really notices.

I don't have a job right now. Am planning on doing freelance work. But it's hard, hard, hard to get motivated.

I plan on going back to work in August. With the move and the surgery and my vacation in July I think August is the best time. Also retail usually starts hiring for the Christmas season in August/September. So more places may be hiring then they are now.

Freelancing has been going quite well for me. I only have one client but I don't have time for more. They keep me busy. I did get pretty lucky, though, because I had a very specific skill set that they needed.

That's good! I am getting more work these days. Just when I posted that I had like nothing coming in.

I haven't had a job in a while. I have some severe issues with about returning to my profession and odd-and-end jobs have all ending poorly (because of me, of course. Anxiety and depression have played significant roles as well as panic attacks). I really feel incapable but I'm relatively young and "stable" so the world see I have no excuse.

Looking for a job. For me that means I've just started writing my resume and I'm looking through job search engines for jobs I want. I've also applied to receive light support services in my search. I haven't worked in 8 years. So I'll take help if I can, and if it works for me.

That's great, WovenGalaxy. I hope the support services are helpful, and you find something that works for you.

I want to go back to work sooner but I can’t with my surgery on the 4th. I know I’m protected regarding the LGBTQ and trans laws I just hope there’s not any issue in general with anyone. I was so relieved that the medical part of my transition is being 95% covered by my insurance that I haven’t given much of a thought to possible work place harassment. I “pass” though so there really shouldn’t be that sort of problem. I’ve had ****** coworkers before and then I’ve also been one of the favorites and part of the “in crowd” I act the same with everyone just people respond differently to my personality. My therapist said one time something along the lines that I have an irritating personality at times. Some people think it’s great and I’ve been complimented on it before. It’s very unique and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

But yeah I’m hoping I won’t have a lot of trouble.

I'm starting a new job tomorrow morning and I feel very nervous about it. This job is different from what I was doing previously, so it has me questioning my abilities. Right now I am not sure about anything. I'm that shaky.

I haven't worked since December 18th 2020, so the first few weeks will be an adjustment. Sleepiness will plague me, since I have to wake up around 4:50 am. This isn't my desired shift, but I must work days to start.

All the recent changes especially the move on April 30th have been hard on me. I'm a nervous wreck right now. Plus the 4 months of limited social interaction due to the restrictions in Ontario has left me socially awkward. I have not been around many people. It showed during the interview. I didn't know what to say at times. Somehow I survived it.

I’m afraid my job is triggering my ptsd. I know I need a new job and I don’t know what to do. I don’t like my job and the location is convenient plus it’s the most money I’ve ever earned. I want a job that is financially lucrative and emotionally fulfilling. None of my jobs have been satisfying. I know I need to earn more education to get a more fulfilling job. I feel stuck.
