When I last negotiated for a raise, I wrote out a summary of all the work I was doing beyond my job description and also how much money I was bringing into the company. Basically, wrote a summary proposal explaining why my work was benefiting the company. I also looked up competitive salaries in my field and worked that into the proposal. I brought it to my boss and we discussed it and he was very supportive and was going to attempt to adjust the budget to give me a raise (before other stuff happened).

The biggest thing that your boss will ask is WHY do you deserve a raise? So you need to put together a case for why you are worth it.

It will be a tense discussion because you're discussing salary and it's personal to you. So try to be relaxed about it and remember it's a business discussion. I know there are emotions tied to it, because it's a lot about self-worth and value, but for him/her, it will be a business discussion.

What's your industry standard? Was it ever discussed upon hiring? Have you had any performance reviews?

If you haven't been employed there for a full year, I wouldn't discuss a raise. It depends on what their benchmarks for performance appraisal are. Do they do quarterly or annual reviews?
