A five year plan sounds good. With that comes a change in my own expectations too. I need to learn not to take the job too seriously.

A 5 year plan is about maximum your brain can get around I think . Anymore than that and it just loses reality . but a plan gives you goals and we do best when we are striving to something . It gives you purpose and a reason to drag yourself off to employment which may not fulfill you . In truth you don't even need to have all the details sorted at the start . To be honest for the first two years I was in a wealth creation phase ( basically a saving phase ) and I would describe it as " I am saving for something big , I'm just not sure what that thing is yet , but when I work it out I will have the money to fund it " the plan evolved as I started to understand what I really wanted .
I understand that earning power and commitments will impact on goals and expectations for an individuals plan . But whether there grand or modest plans , if they will improve your life then they are still worth having . Yes , for sure , total focus on money is not a healthy thing , so it's not wise to fixate , but getting a step closer to a "dream" makes you feel optimistic and better about yourself . After all the only reason we go to work is for the money , if they stopped paying we would stop going . Everything about a job we like or dislike comes secondary after that . After much soul searching along the way I realised what I wanted was control of my destiny . 5 years is not as long a time as we first imagine . |

Oh and p.s. , to be clear , you don't have to wait 5 years to see any payback . Life begins to improve once you have a plan . Once you have a purpose and direction . So the journey becomes better than what you had . Maybe not straight away , but once you start ticking off your mini targets . So your not putting your life on hold for 5 years , swapping it for one end payoff . Your training , or retraining yourself along the way . Which has great benefits.

I like the positive yet practical outlook. You’re taking the focus off the nonsense at work and putting it back on what really matters - building a life for yourself. This morning I was thinking about how much I hate my job and I wondered is there something else I would focus on and feel miserable about if not this job? Most likely yes, there would be. So the thought process is all up to me. I can change it or I can stay stuck in it.
