Extremely important poll here .
Was just contemplating the general lie .. which is people should follow their passion in their career . As if 98% of people could do that ?
So my thought was ... who here would attend work next week if they no longer paid you money to go there ? ..ok let's up the anti .. if you could earn the same money , by not attending ..or attending your job ...who would attend .
O.k. , I understand , no one will reply . Fair enough . Boo hoo . To acknowledge is to accept the lie .
I was watching some dolphins today ..who are apparently not the dominant species on the planet ..and yet none of them were doing tasks which they were not invested in . None were exchanging time for money , or time for fulfilment ...or both.
But we must make believe that our lives are of significance . That we make a difference ....while making no difference what so ever ..
Ah well c'est la vie huh ...

I do love my job and it’s very rewarding for me. But I wouldn’t work for free. Not full time for sure. Now I did volunteer when I had time so if I didn’t need the money, I’d likely volunteer in the same field but not full time. I believe in balance of doing one’s job well while enjoying it AND being fairly compensated for it. Since majority of us have to work for a living (and for many years)I believe working at something one has passion for.

I don’t think one MUST pursue passion though. It depends what is important for particular people. For some rewarding career means a lot and for some it doesn’t, and some people don’t want to work at all either looking for others to support them or welfare or settle for life in poverty. There is no cookie cutter approach to life. Whatever rocks your boat so to speak.

I wouldn’t generalize about people not making a difference. Ton of professions make a difference in people’s life every single day. I don’t think it’s s belief, it’s a reality. We all need to eat, see a doctor, get a car and a toilet fixed, get a hair cut etc etc Very many people people do make a difference in others’ life every time they arrive to work in the morning.,
Thanks for this!

Thank you ....a balanced and articulate summary . I appreciate the thought you put into your reply .
Would I stand by my post in a court of law ? ...probably not , the ramblings of a mad man perhaps . Although to be honest , posts like that from me are an attempt to achieve the opposite. Just fire for effect to release a safety valve in my thoughts .
Thanks for calling me out on the "not making a difference" throw away line . No one ( which I guess includes me ) has the right to say such a sweeping comment . I guess that was just my Oscar Wilde moment there .. the dramatic prose ...or something like that .
From memory your in the medical field ? A demanding profession which I'm sure has its fair share of highs and lows .
It's true that I do wonder at times why as a race we need to always be on this fast freight train to ..? ..not sure where ? , but I sort of think we have it wrong somehow . This fleeting thing called a life . But of course I can talk of a fantasy world as much as I like . The reality is this is the world we live in . Also I'm very much a hypocrite..speaking of wishing for an alternative world ...and yet have worked hard , doing long hours ever since I was 15 and they unlocked the holding pen called school and popped me out the end of the production line all set for work . I've never "liked" my work ,I was born into underground gold mining ..there was never a choice ..perhaps that was a good thing ? but it's made good money and allowed me to do what I feel is the most important thing I could do with my life ..which is give a nice existence to the ones I love . I was once offered a chance at a "passion" , a job offer one late evening in a bar in Perrone in France by the curator of a specialist museum .I thought about it that night ..then the next morning declined . My "passion" didn't stand up to my "calling" , which was to be a good provider .
Thanks for your reply . I'm feeling much better about the world right now . In a mentally calm place .

I would not attend!

I would be happy to work on my own projects, to help other people with theirs, to contribute a bit to my community, maybe to write a book or two. I would prefer to enjoy myself than to have a career.

Monday morning at 3.20 a.m. . Up bright eyed and bushy tailed to head off and do it all over again 😜
Maybe the honest truth is that at 53 I am finally past it . Too old and over my use by date ? ... or perhaps it's that I have finally assembled enough life experience and preserved enough brain cells ( from being killed by alcohol ) that I finally have worked out the game ?
about 70 Mondays to go till financial independence . Being the master of my own destiny is my Valhalla . ..hmm , a Wagner cd on my way to work ? Flying through along the bush track in my landcruiser ?...like a Valkyrie? ... sounds perfect ! A great day to be alive ! Let's do this , once more into the breaches my friends . .... to actually beat the system at its own game and become independent of its rules . The scary thing is you wonder to yourself if this is what it's all about ? The whole motivation is actually beating the system ... once you do will the rage and indignation fade and the prize will be hollow ? ..ah well , there will be plenty of time to worry about that if and when it happens . Have a wonderful week .

I --do-- make a difference....every day.
Some days it's so easy it's natural, others, it's more like dragging a battleship through a swamp, sideways, in to the mifdlea hurricane.
I --MUST-- KEEP TRYING.

I don’t love my job. I often say I would love to work part time or not work but I suspect I would get bored and restless and I would end up doing all kinds of volunteer work.

I think everybody’s job makes a difference. Society depends on everybody’s individual functions to keep it going. Poll

Good post Sisabel . I concur with your suspicions about no direction after giving up enforced hours . I love hvert's idea of writing a book . Have it tiny run published privately , hard cover . Sell absolutely no copies , but you've researched it , you've written it . Your soul is in it . You can unload copies of it to your relatives at Xmas as presents saving you bag loads of money on presents .

An MT5010 dragging itself out from a journey to the centre of the earth . About a 1 hour trip , from vertical depth of 880metres , about a 10 k road trip . My guys gave me this . A sign of there're affection when I turned 50 and became and old ******* . "We few , we happy few , we band of brothers " ... 3.20a.m. ...yet again . Time to go and make believe I am motivated and inspire a group of young men to work as a team ...again .... actually still don't mind that part . Tuesday . Could be worse .

2.10 a.m. . Woke up early this morning for work . No point trying to go back to sleep , once your awake ..your awake . Must be the excitement of it being Friday . Last day of the official week . The never ending cycle almost completed once again . Check the ftse100 ..check the dow jones , see how the markets went overnight . Calculate if I'm closer or further away from being financially independent ..which is a play on words really , because your never financially independent if your still dependant on how a market performs . I get that . I have a plan there too , just need to get lucky for a little longer . We'll see . Start to wonder if I'm some sort of variation of a doomsday prepped ? .. no , no don't think so . Just obsessed..so all cool .
What can I control today then ? Attitude ? , yep I can do that . Run the scenarios in my head for today . Be ready to hit the ground running . First couple of hours will be crucial. Drop the ball and get behind and the whole day will be playing catch up . Then at the end of it .. sanctuary . The weekend . The 20% of life worth living . Yeah sure , the phone will ping away with regularity and ring if they feel their demands haven't been responded to quick enough , but sanctuary all the same for the most part . 2018 was always going to be a tough year of work . Knew it would be a grind by about now . Over halfway done , but too far away from the finish of the year to get that second wind yet .October will be better , just keep on digging . O.k. ..

So Friday ...it even rolls of the tongue nicer doesn't it .. Friday ... even my dog knows it is Friday . He's not pretending to be still asleep . He know he's got through , just about , and mega walk is just around the corner . A trip in the landcruiser , then sniffing on the trail of kangaroos and wild camels .. not just run of the mill neibourhood cats . What he doesn't know is it will be bath Saturday tomorrow . He won't be so keen on that . What should I cook tomorrow night for my wife ? Will it be a dish I get right or one of those less than stella efforts ? Time will tell . Can always reach for the exspensive wine shelf if the taste test isn't rocking my boat to save the situation .
So a poll ? , ok not a poll . Just a run of verbal diarrhoea of no consequence . . Well as a disclaimer I could say " you didn't have to read this far " and also it's pretty much just therapy for me . Writing words of thoughts is good therapy , no matter if the are well ordered or not .
O.k. .. getting close to the time to morph into that unfeeling , results driven manager guy . The sooner that guy gets packed away for ever the better .
Well done , you have arrived at the end of the official working week . 62.5 hrs on site ,7.5 hrs travel . Add in a couple of extra hours thumbing through emails and it's A job lot . There's been clean water to drink , and shelter and not the fear of civil war , so it beats the hell out of many people week . Such is a life . Stay the course , it's not for ever .
