I am not sending an application in my post. I talk about what I can offer when sending an application. I won't say I need a job in a job application. I list my technical and soft skills along my experiences. But I have pressing needs now to survive, and I am talking about that here, in a mental health forums, because I am stressed out.

Sans Nom I don't know if you can even see this, as all of a sudden you're showing as "anonymous" and "guest", and I can't click on the link to your profile and posts anymore. It's not active.

No longer a member maybe? That fast?

I'm sick of MANY things people say, the same trite things or things that are judgemental/hurtful:

"Start your own business"
"Have a positive attitude"
"Change your attitude"
"Use key words on your resume"
"Use spell check on your resume"
"Dress appropriately"
"You shouldn't have any trouble"

Actually I wonder if people really mean well. They are better off not saying anything rather than the same platitudes that have been around for decades. Maybe people are afraid it could happen to them (It could) so they blame the victim. We seem to do that here. If society has a problem they don't know how to address or fix, they blame the victim. Look how we criminalized homelessness for decades. Now it's gotten so bad, I don't know how they can solve the "crisis" at it is suddenly called. (It's been a crisis forever but city officials thought of the homeless as lazy and responsible for their own situation)

And our culture is very unforgiving towards the unemployed. Christ, it's a Catch 22: You have a better chance of getting hired if you're already hired by someone. And the longer it goes on, the less likely you'll get hired.

I don't know, I have this pipe dream that maybe one day attitudes will change, like they have about gay marriage for example. People are unfairly stigmatized due to things they can't control. It's not up to you whether you get hired or not; it's up to them. And it's a subjective process.

And misleading statistics are a slap in the face. It's supposedly rosy out there.

Can you edit text? Try Scribendi in Ontario. You have to pass a rigorous qualification exam, but you can work from home. Naked. DO NOT tell them Lefty sent you... we had a falling out over the technical specifications for an American variable-geometry strategic bomber. It happens.

Or I hear, "There's jobs out there, you just have to apply". I'm not disagreeing, but in what industry do they mean there's jobs you know? Plus, there's maybe hundreds of other applicants too applying to the same job.

Applying doesn't mean you'll get the job. I've applied to hundreds of jobs by now.

"You just have to apply." Really? Oh, and then the job's mine. Idiot people.

Unless you're either some time of genius overacheiver that other applicants can't compete with or somebody who is willing to do shady **** like sabotage other people's applications or lie and cheat to make yourself look better, it seems like many jobs are simply out of reach.

Sometimes I just don't see the point in trying.

I'm so sorry Sans Nom has decided to leave, guys I agree with you all. Finding a job is certainly a lot harder than some people would want you to believe. This kind of comments can be very annoying. Sending many hugs to everyone

I definitely agree with all the points that were made in this thread. People do say thoughtless things and therein judgment if you can't get a job.

What is your age? Over about 35 .. sad to say, there is horrible age discrimination. My sister refused to listen to this and I don't think she will ever work again because she is 50 and there is no hiding that.

I have nothing to suggest for her.

If I were 50 and couldn't get a job I would just say screw it and buy a cheap RV and live on the road.

Not if you had a wife and kids. But my sister has a husband working so she really doesn't have to work.

If I were 55 or so and lost my job I would just wait for social security at 62.

Yeah I would. Then again, I never plan on getting married and having children so it's w/e.

My only loyalty is to myself. If my mental health was threatened, I would walk out of a marriage without a second thought. Chances are, if I was married, the cause to my struggles would be because of the marriage anyways.

It doesn't help that the government keeps bragging about how "strong" the economy is and there's "lots" of hiring going on and the U.S. "added ______ jobs this month."

A slap in the face, and it's just numbers. Statistics aren't always accurate. It depends on the amount of data used and how it is collected. They don't count unemployed people who have run out of unemployment and drops out of the system. They just count claims or who's drawing unemployment.

What year is this Yiba? 2019, right? Don't you think everybody has tried temp agencies? I'm just saying that people that ask "Are you doing this or that? This is the year 2019 so don't act that way and ask me that. I know I am signed up with several and you know what I just got back today when I'm definitely qualified for a position that was open.

The recruiter said "I filled that position, but I'll keep you in mind for other opportunities". I wanted to say F' you, no kidding. I have plenty of exp for that job so why didn't she pick me.

She is talking about temp agencies, you seem to be talking about recruiting agencies. I have never had luck with recruiters but I have with temp agencies.

Ok I know but in this day and age why would someone even ask someone else if they tried temp agencies. I just don't get that one. It's not like all these staffing places are a new thing out there.

Not sure if you are still responding to me but I definitely would because it kind of seems you don't see the value in a temp agency. You said they were all the same. I have never gotten anything from a recruiting firm but I got a ton the last time I was out of work from a temp agency.

Almost every 6 weeks they would have a 13 week assignment at a nice place that was pretty awesome. Then after 8 weeks on the job you would qualify for unemployment. So, once you were done with that job you could go on unemployment. In fact what happened was I was on unemployment, I got an offer for a temp job I did that.. the unemployment I was already on way stayed and when the temp job ended I just started up unemployment again.

I would have stayed doing this forever (the pay was surprisingly good) but they didn't have health insurance.

I have done temp agencies for a long time too, they will submit my resume occasionally, but then it's the same runaround I hear from them. The assignments don't always go permanent, and I got tired of being in and out of a job. "If we find a match we will let you know". They should only know how frustrating that is for a job seeker. I'm sure they do, then why do it. Isn't that what they're supposed to provide to us job seekers, a service?

Don't get me wrong but you might be missing something. Maybe your skills are not that much polished & require more efforts on them. The competition has increase a lot over the past few years & it has become tough to get a job & make money. It's a hard & bitter truth.
