I interviewed with the top of a small organization.

The moment I sat down, he started with the negatives about how small his organization is and how little support I may get. And then he talked about the positives.

Should I take it as a "read between the lines" kind of thing where he was trying to discourage me? How should I interpret this?

I would take it at face value. He's letting you know the downsides of the job in case that's not the kind of thing you'd want to deal with. But maybe there was something in the way he said it that made you think it was directed towards you?

That makes sense. I guess he was been realistic rather than being negative then.
