I have a unique first name. It’s sort of trendy. But people just mispronounce it all the time. I’ve always hated it. But it has a really cool nickname. I don’t know why my parents never gave me the nickname. I have longed for that nick name instead of the real name for years. I think the nickname is so cool. I’ve never had the guts to change my name because of my social anxiety. But today I kinda did. I mean, I announced it on Facebook and to my mom. I just have to bring it up at work. Are there any suggestions on how I can tell work that I changed my name without embarrassing myself and or sounding like I’m totally off my rocker?

I would just go ahead and give a short version of that explanation.

"I've always preferred this other name, and I've finally decided to change it." Or something along those lines. You don't owe people a detailed explanation, and frankly, most people aren't that interested in the details.

I don't think most people would think it's odd or anything. Although they might keep forgetting and call you the old name for a bit.

I agree it's probably just the social anxiety causing you to stress over it, but do whichever choice is good for you.

Did you legally change it? Like fill out the proper forms, get it changed on social security card and things like that?

It might take a while to catch on but it will. People will hear others calling you by your new name and they will do the same. Good for you to make a change you feel good about.

I don't think changing your name is that odd, Mountaindewed. They will likely take a while to get used to it, but I think they'll accept it just fine. Lots of people change their names. Try not to worry about it too much. Just be honest with your explaination, or give no explaination at all if you prefer it. I agree with CepheidVariable, Sisabel ands the anonymous user. "I've changed it because I like this one better" should be fine. I don't think more is required. That's just my opinion though. The final decision is up to you. Wish you good luck! Let us know how it goes. Sending many hugs to you
