I volunteer as an admin support person one day a week with my local food bank.

Does anyone else here volunteer?

I volunteer with an honor society I belong to, and my duty at the moment is to sort and shelve books. The added bonus is that per every 15 minutes I volunteer, I can select a book to keep...I've done enough volunteer work to have a huge pile under the Christmas tree for my mom and dad!

My shrink suggested I volunteer at this recovery place called DePaul, but I have been too unstable to start yet.

I do! I volunteer once (sometimes twice) a week at a hospitality type organization.

I love it and the people I work for.
Thanks for this!

Thanks so much everyone for replying!

It's nice to know there are so many other people who volunteer. I'm doing it as preparation for getting back into work.

Yes me too, I volunteer in 2 places, one with elderly people the other with children. I love them both - if anyone is considering volunteering I would say go for it.
Thanks for this!

I volunteer at a few different places but cut back in the past year or two. I have a hard time saying no!

I'm not volunteering right now because I have needed this year to do some stabilizing and healing. I have done loads of volunteering in the past, though. When my kids were growing up I volunteered teaching arts and crafts to certain classes, also was a reader for a great program called Rolling Readers. So I'd read a story to the 1st graders, then we'd do an art project having to do with the story we had read. That was so much fun.

I did some other vol work with their school and always enjoyed it.

I used to volunteer with "Stand Down", which is a yearly event for Vietnam veterans...3 days of access to all sorts of services for vets, referrals and such. I volunteered with setting it up, then taking it down.

For a year I volunteered with a youth (teen) program in my hometown. My job was working outreach, so going with a partner out in the evening to reach out to teens (homeless, runaways, throwaways) who needed services (gave them referrals and/or a ride to a safe house), passing out care kits, and doing on-the-spot counseling. I absolutely loved that job and I was hired as a paid employee after the year of volunteering.

The most recent vol position I've had was facilitating a NAMI Connection group. I facilitated for 16 months. A very powerful experience. I'd like to facilitate a group again at some point.
