I'm in a HUGE dilemma about a contract job that came up yesterday and need some advice. I have to reply today to the recruiter about this job.
It is a 12-month contract role, with a possibility for extension. There is NO guarantee it will extend. However, that being said, thtis company has been known to convert contract workers to full time permanent roles based on a long-term contract. Still, there is no guarantee. The position pays VERY well - $60 per hour. The contracting or staffing agency will provide health care benefits only after three months of contract employment with them. I am in the beginning stages of a divorce. I have not hired or retained a lawyer yet. I am working on obtaining a pro bono lawyer based on low income and abuse from my marriage. I should find out within this week or the next two weeks if I am eligible for pro bono services. Here's the other important details: 1. My husband is paying for my health insurance benefits right now through HIS employer. 2. My husband is moving out right now. He agreed to pay for his part of the rent through January. Then, I am responsible for paying the whole rent, when I am currently unemployed and would have to use a bank loan in order to pay the full rent come Feb 1. I DO need employment ASAP. 3. In my state, it's a law to have continuous health care coverage for all 12 months of the year. Now, I do not know: 1) when I will get a lawyer 2) when a divorce will be finalized My questions: 1) Do you think it's possible to get my husband legally to pay for my health insurance through the three-month probationary period, even if we're already divorced? 2) Do I take a risk and grab this job opportunity NOW because I need employment ASAP? Thanks in advance for your help. __________________ "Twenty-five years and my life is still trying to get up that great big hill of hope for a destination" ~4 Non Blondes |

I’d take $60 an hour any time and at all times. It wouldn’t be a dilemma. lol
With 120k you can buy private emergency health care. I had to buy private emergency insurance at some point and I wasn’t making anywhere near that kind of money. It was crappy insurance but I managed. I doubt they’d make your husband pay for your health insurance after divorce especially if you make good money. But I also doubt you’ll be already divorced that soon if no one even filed for divorce yet! Of course I’d take a job and I honestly don’t see any risk in here. Now if you have other options, I’d consider other options. But if not it’s absolute yes |

I think you are right. I don't have any other job options right now. This is the one opportunity on my plate. And I do need employment as soon as humanly possible. $60/hr will do wonders for my finances right now. I can even pay off all my debt with that amount per month. That would be a HUGE bonus. And supposedly it's a great company to work for - if I can land myself in a healthy work environment, it will also do wonders for my mental health. I am only just concerned about the health insurance not kicking in for 3 months AND the fact that the role is 12 months. But perhaps these things are more minor, and perhaps I need to prioritize having a job. __________________ "Twenty-five years and my life is still trying to get up that great big hill of hope for a destination" ~4 Non Blondes |

I do need continuous health insurance coverage no matter what in order to cover my medications and my individual therapy. So, that will have to be worked out somehow. I have done contract work in the past, and you are correct in that it does allow a certain freedom from all the BS that can go on. Thanks for your input! __________________ "Twenty-five years and my life is still trying to get up that great big hill of hope for a destination" ~4 Non Blondes |

Well, I threw my hat into the ring! Now it's up to the company to decide if they wish to interview me.
