About a month ago, I started to track my job apps, and to date I have applied to 66 positions. From thoses 66 apps I received 2 phone interviews and one in the form of questionnaire. Only one of them invited me to a technical interview, but I cancelled because I didn't feel comfortable sharing my personal info with them, especially everything is done online these days due to Covid-19 lockdown, and there is no way to verify their legitimacy.
I went through this before with my advanced degrees, where I applied to 100s of jobs over the last 5 years, with no success. The best I could secure was a low paying contract job I was overqualified to. This is really discouraging and depressing. |

Dear Diurnal,
I am so very, very sorry you are in this unhappy and discouraging situation. When I was younger, I experienced something somewhat similar to what you describe and it was not only hard on me but brutal. I sure hope things turn around for you! Sincerely yours, Yao Wen |

It’s hard. I am sorry to hear that.
I can only speak for myself but I’d switch my career field completely or just get any job, just to pay bills and continue looking while working. Everyone says that’s easier to look for a job while already working. I agree because I think you are less stressed at interviews and it’s easier to show resume with irrelevant jobs then resume with large gaps in employment. Is there a vocational career center by you where you can seek help? How about recruiting company? Temporary jobs? |

I actually am talking about after I decided to change career paths. I took the one-year contract job to pay the bills and to give me time to learn new technologies, and now that I am confident using them to build apps, and I have and still adding more complex features to my apps, but still recruiters are not impressed. Some might say I have no experience, but while I am having advanced degrees, no one gave me any chance either. I cannot say it's a communication skill issue, because I seldom get phone interviews to start with, and I edit my resumes and cover letters constantly.
Most low paying jobs require in-person attendance which is not what I prefer/would do in these circumstances given the lockdown and the wide covid-19 spread, and they are of no benefit to me in terms of experience in the long run. I don't want to be caught in this as I struggled to learn while working. I just need a chance to put my feet in the industry. If I apply to stack the shelves, I get quick responses, but not when I apply for white collar jobs that requires more skills, which I believe I have What I can do I am doing: I apply for jobs, learn, build apps, while being honest and myself. |

Ok. I get it. No, random jobs are not desirable and it’s not the best option but if one has to eat and doesn’t want to end up homeless, typically most people I know would have to take on any job to survive.
I just don’t personally know how one can live without income for any length of time (perhaps beyond unemployment pay which I think has time limit) unless perhaps someone else pays their bills. I don’t know where you live and what are your options of getting bills paid but here you’d not survive without income or retirement or disability payments if you are on your own. That’s the only reason I suggested perhaps take any job at this point Maybe situation isn’t as desperate as it appeared to me in your posts |

There is a pandemic and the economy is extremely uncertain, not to mention this is the holiday season. Slim pickings out there. If you have unemployment, you may have to live off that for a few months and if you don't, you may end up having to take something that you feel you're overqualified for.

Hiring usually slows down during the holidays, even without a pandemic going on. I hope things look up for you in the new year.
