Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has any advice or support or personal tales on anxiety and working.

I am starting a new job (should be fairly low-stress, but what job is low-stress, am I right?)

It's not full-time.

I have a graduate thesis to write as well.

I have a lot on my plate, but I need to make some money.

Am I just overthinking this? I have basically quit all the other jobs I've tried over the past year or so because of anxiety or incompatibility or both. I've also been out of the workforce for a while. I mean I have had these brief stints at jobs I didn't like. But that's about it.

Any support would be welcome.

Dear WastingAsparagus,

Work anxiety can be really brutal.

I read a book awhile back that really helped me with it. I loaned it to someone so I don't remember the title. I think it was called "The Worry Cure" or the "The Worry Remedy" or something. I think the name of the psychologist who wrote it is Leahy or Leay. Sorry my memory is not so good. The book was so helpful to me. I hope the person who I loaned it to will return it to me because it had chapters on health worries which is something I am going through now.

Don't know if this book would be helpful to you. Perhaps there are other and better books. I don't know.

Hopefully many people will see your post and respond to it with really helpful ideas. I wish you the very best in your new job and with your thesis. Writing a thesis is no walk in the park. I had a devil of time writing mine.

Sincerely yours, Yao Wen

I am in the same boat as you, and hope someone responds. Thank you for asking.

@WastingAsparagus one thing I'm telling myself with my new job, is "one day at a time." I'm trying not to look too far into the future, while at the same time reminding myself why I got a job. I also like the idea of giving it some time, and recognizing that I need to adjust, and that Will take time.

Also, in my spare time, I'd really like to use it more wisely, for my own mental health, as a way to keep myself healthy and sane. I was listening to a podcast where a psychologist was talking about making a "time confetti" list. Time confetti is bits of time we have here and there. The list was what she wanted to do with that time. Also I think scheduling rest is really important. One of my favorite quotes is by Banksy (the graffiti artist, and I'm not sure if he said it first) "when you get tired, learn to rest, not quit."

Thanks. Yeah that is helpful.

With my job I can pretty much do it whenever I want so I have flexibility.

I guess I just feel like it's a matter of deciding when to actually do it.

I know we have discussed this a bit in the past. I think that the situation you describe of not being full time and having some flexibility seems like a good way to start back working.

I was let go from that awful job that caused me extreme anxiety and led me to have to take mental health leave. After about a month off, I was offered to try doing some paid freelance writing assignments by a company. So, I started off slowly. At first I did a few test projects, then 2-3 projects a week. After about a month and half like that, they asked me if I wanted to take on more work, which I did. Now most weeks I work close to full time, sometimes more or less, because there are projects of different lengths.

I think that after all I went though, at my previous job, had I started off at this level of workload it would have been too much for me. I'm glad I had the opportunity to ease into working again.

Do you know about how many hours a week this job will take? Wishing you the best of luck!

Thanks! I can basically set my own hours with this job since I'll be an independent contractor, but I hope to work 5-10 hours a week to start. I am thinking that will be a manageable amount for now. Then if I want to expand my business or go for other jobs I can do that after I evaluate how this amount is affecting me and whether I like it or not.

There are new policies in my current job and they are currently making me angry. My other job is making me anxious, too. Since the pandemic started, this will be my first project to attempt to complete. My solution so far is sleep. It's slower to get things finished, but lots of sleep gets me through the day. It's too much that I have to change this habit soon.

I hope things go well for you, WastingAsparagus.

I’ve been working ft with ptsd (anxiety disorder) for 4.5 years now. It’s rough. I’ve been on and off medication, in and out of therapy, sober and not sober. You have to find what works for you. Im still trying to figure that out myself .

One day at a time as wovengalaxy says sounds like excellent advice to me. It's helped me when starting something new to really ease up on my expectations, just take things as they come.

Good luck it sounds like you've got a good plan!

HI, I also have suffered from anxiety and what I have found is that when I work out and eat healthy foods that my anxiety is well treated and I am overall happier. I also live by the motto look good, feel good. Now please don't read that thinking you have to be dressed to the 9's this is simply stating, get up and shower, put a nice outfit on and give yourself enough time to get ready in the am without rushing adding additional stress to your day. When attempting to balance school and work my advice is schedule the time ahead of time and stick to the schedule.
