I have orientation on Wednesday and I’m gonna have to tell them I need 7 weeks off. They knew that I needed that time off when they set up the interview. But now it’s a week longer then what I told them before. I called my doctor this afternoon. So I’m wondering if when I tell them all this on Wednesday if I’ll get fired right away. Before even starting.
Is this even worth going through the trouble? I’m regretting it again. They are super excited to have me but I’m nervous about telling them I now need an extra week. I mean, I’ll still be there for the Christmas rush. I’m just not exactly sure how to handle this. Also can they ask what type of surgery I’m having? Is that a legal question to ask? __________________ Ridin' with Biden |

I would guess that one week longer won't make a diffrence, especially if it's doctor's orders. My guess is that they can't ask specifics about surgeries. I can see if you get close to someone after working there a while and they ask what the surgery is. But this seems like it might be legally wrong to ask. I'm not 100% sure, I just know that during interview questions, they can't legally ask you what kind of medical issue you had, if that's your reason for leaving a job, for instance. This seems along the same lines. Anyone else want to chime in?

As long as you told them at some point, I don't see a problem in asking for that extra week off. I don't think they can fire you for that. I am not sure as to the legality of it, but I am pretty sure they can't ask you what kind of surgery you're having. If they do, you could probably just make something up if you're not comfortable telling them. __________________ "Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. I'm not in the US but I would think the previous replies are correct. Look at it this way, surgery can be unpredictable, people can need an extra week or more depending on complications/recovery. So I wouldn't worry about an extra week if you already have that agreement.
