I had a situation that left me completely shocked and dumbfounded.
For context, I’ve been trying to get a full time job since I graduated college almost 4 years ago now. I’ve been able to get two full time jobs in the past but they were both temporary. So when those ended, I had to work multiple jobs which I hated. So I was so happy to finally get this full time, not temporary job, my first ever. I also have terrible social anxiety (my whole life) and depression. My job is essentially a receptionist position but I also help with other things around the office. I had someone call today and ask our address. I told them. They showed up and were turned away because we only take appointments. This person got angry and said they would leave a bad review. Suddenly, I’m getting yelled at for letting them show up and not asking if they had an appointment. Being told over and over that we don’t take walk ins, which I know, but I had no idea this person was planning on showing up right after we were done talking. Then she left a bad review and my boss comes into my office, shoves the phone with the bad review in my face and says “look at this”. It was just… not my fault??? I’ve worked customer service for years and I’ve never EVER gotten in trouble for an angry customer. Usually I just laugh about it with my coworkers. The angry customer didn’t even bother me very much. I was just shocked that I was now getting a talk for something I really could not have foreseen. Because of my anxiety, I was truly frozen for the next couple of hours. I thought about asking to go home because I literally couldn’t even think anymore. The whole day was lost because of that one situation and the way my fight or flight was now on high alert. Eventually, this boss left and I was able to calm down again. But now I’m panicking because I’m wondering if it’s time to start looking again for a new job. After all that work to get this one. To be back to square one. No idea what to do next at this point. |

You didn’t do anything wrong. You could not have known that person would show up without an appointment. The person that yelled at you was over-reacting, you clearly did not deserve that. Does this company have a HR person you can talk to?

Unfortunately no. It’s such a small company that only about 10 people total work there and I have no coworkers in my same position.

You did nothing wrong, you're right. Your boss did. How are you feeling about it today?

Screw this jerk. What a terrible boss. Listen you are doing great. Working. Bettering yourself. Sadly you’ll run into idiots in life. He probably projected his own misery on you. Be proud of yourself and your work. He isn’t worth the time of your life

That's really not your fault. You have no clue if the person is calling to deliver a package or if they are a client with an appointment who is lost, or anything.
Can you add it to your phone answering? Sure. And your boss should have just asked you to, in the future, remind anyone who is coming in that it's by appointment only, but you're not to blame for this person not giving you that information so you could prevent it for them. And really, who doesn't ask if a business takes walk-ins or not? I'm not sure exactly what kind of business you work for, but I know that, in terms of professional services, I'd never really just assume I could walk in. Heck, you have to have appts for urgent care these days - which was intended to be walk-in treatment for urgent health cases. So really, it's on that person. I mean, can you learn from it? Sure, but is it your fault? No. Should you be yelled at or blamed? Absolutely not. And, honestly, the bad review will remind people who want to walk in that you don't take walk ins. So maybe that's good. __________________ What if I fall? Oh, my dear, but what if you fly?
