So this seems to be a common occurrence with mental health issues and employment. I have had so many jobs in my lifetime I'm age 54 and I am currently unemployed.
I had been watching my 2-year-old grandson full-time for almost 2 months and I'm on social services. What an embarrassment. I find myself needing to get back into the workforce, however I don't know what to apply for where to go or if I will even last that long when I do find a job. I'm so confused. I do have a job coach (I guess she is I'm not quite sure what she is). But she's so freaking cheery and Uber positive that I just can't deal with her sometimes LOL she talks about how excited she is and how she has faith in me but she doesn't even know me. Anyways I'm confused. Here we go again to the part-time, underpaid, Hanging-On-by-a-thread, can't pay my bills on time, let's see if I can hold on to this one long enough, job search |

@DeeeSchmeee68 I am sorry you are in such a challenging situation. Do you have any skills that could be converted into working virtually?
I am not fond of people that white wash situations. I would much rather have someone coaching me that is practical and helping me find actual work, not just trying to cheer me up. Another option I have heard of is people working evenings or nights or weekends. If you asked me what to do next, I would say list any job skills you have whether you worked a job in them or not. Start googling the strongest skills you have with something like this Virtual work needed for typing light bookkeeping (whatever applies to you) That would be the most flexible. If that does not give much to go on, try picking times you could work with the skills and just see what kind of jobs are out there. So just getting a job title with skills you have would be a big start. If you want to send me a message (Click on CANDC to the left of this message and send personal message) and we can brainstorm this in messages or just list your skills here and let members suggest ideas. The key to brainstorming is not to rule out anything. Just keep open to the ideas. @CANDC __________________ Super Moderator Community Support Team "Things Take Time" |

How’s it going?
I just wanted to say you’re in no way an embarrassment- you are doing an amazing thing looking after your grandson! I’m sure at 54 you have a whole lot of different life skills that you could transfer to many jobs. If you try something and it doesn’t work out you’ll have learned a bit more about what’s not a good fit for you. I have a great new colleague who was out of the work force many years and didn’t know if she’d be okay or not in this job - she’s actually a great worker (it’s her attitude rather than any skill she had, skills can be learned, attitude is far more important), she just needed a chance to try it out. Hoping you’ll get that chance soon too! |

Thank you all for the response. I've had many customer service cashier jobs. I've worked in a bank a home improvement store and also as a ophthalmic Tech. I recently also applied for disability and then denied fourth time. I may appeal but it's so exhausting.
I'm still navigating how to use this forum. How do I get notifications when someone responds to my post? |

(1) Join some temp agencies. (2) Against my will, I also suggest substitute teaching (I hated it after so many years) since its flexible and you don't need any training except a college degree. (3) Pick a part-time job that you think you'd enjoy doing while you can still baby sit your grandson. Work in a flower shop. Do freelance writing. Work at a science museum. Work for a nonprofit. There's so many options. Try to avoid places that gatekeep jobs with 20-something recruiters who commit ageism without a care in the world. Job coach's are not helpful esp. if you get one through Easter Seals or a workforce center since they aren't in the workforce they are detached from reality. Your job coach, sorry to say, is clueless, since her job is to cheerlead you (toxic positivity) as you try to re-enter the workforce. It's annoying. I empathize with you b/c I went through the same baloney. Hang in there. I feel your frustration. I'm in the same boat. |
