It’s actually taken me a while to find the courage to post this, I’m having issues with feeling like I’m being needy recently and I mention this because it ties in with this particular experience.

One of my favourite colleagues is leaving and hopefully for a better job - we’ve worked together a few years now and tonight it struck me that much of that time was the pandemic. We were essential workers which came with it’s own stresses and worries. I think this might be complicating my reaction. We were a very close knit tight team - and much of this time we couldn’t see our own family and friends because of restrictions, in a way it felt like we were a little family, we had each other’s backs.

I’ve lost colleagues I’ve liked before, sadly once to death (that was sudden and no one got to say goodbye), but this feels different somehow, I feel so sad about it. Obviously I’m happy for her success but I’m just sad that she’s going because she’s such a great colleague. Hard working, organised, fair minded, I don’t have a bad word to say about her.

I feel needy as I say, I’m not fully sure what that’s about, like I should just get over this and it shouldn’t matter but yet it does. Even posting here I feel needy - which is silly because that is what this place is for.

Don’t feel bad. Two years ago one of our favorite and excellent colleagues left our team and district and I cried. Not just because we lost a great team member (we do keep in touch after he left) but because we knew our department will not ever be the same. Then the other one left right after, also very good one.

Bosses were desperate and hired complete losers who don’t do their job, aren’t team players and cause problems. Last two years were a nightmare because of them. So I am not surprised you are upset good worker is leaving. It is upsetting

Yes I agree good workers are rare. She’s actually my team leader and my last two team leaders before her had bad attitudes and so difficult to work with. I feel like things won’t be the same too - we also lost a fantastic manager last year who lead us through the pandemic and her replacement isn’t up to scratch either.

Thanks for validation and sorry you went through this too.

At my last job there was a co-worker that sort of took me under her wing when I was just starting out. She would answer my questions and ask how things were going for me. We'd go have lunch at this good food truck every Friday. I was definitely sad when she got a new job and left.

There are a lot of crappy co-workers out there so I think we really appreciate the good ones.
