I've been in a job for 17 years now in what I thought I liked to do. I find myself being put down at my job, not being respected and getting work taken away from me and/or not given to me. Work that I have done all this time yet no explanations. They act like everything is fine but I just don't know what to do. I'm better than what they allow me to be here. I know what am I still doing here...the pay. It's more than what I would get most places for what I do. Mainly because I've been here so long. I just don't know what to do or where to turn. Any advice?

I'm sorry that is happening to you. Wish I knew what to say that would be helpful. Do you think they are trying to force you out?

I don't know. I am the odd ball out in this place. There are only 4 of us and I am completely different than them. I don't really share much of my personal life with them but they think we are all family here. I would never choose to be "family" with any of them. They don't treat people right.

I, too, am sorry you are dealing with this. I am wary of organizations that call themselves a "family".
Do you have a supervisor you can approach to talk about wanting more responsibility? I think if you don't mention that work is being taken away from you and frame it in terms of wanting to do more, perhaps that approach may work? __________________ "Twenty-five years and my life is still trying to get up that great big hill of hope for a destination" ~4 Non Blondes |

I wish I did. my supervisor is part of the problem and I've stated many times in reviews that I would like more work. I hate to be bored as the day seems so much longer. It's just me and my supervisory and the President and VP that work here. I can go to the board but they are all on the board and their friends are on it. I feel so trapped.

Being somewhere for a longtime, from the employer's viewpoint, means you are more valuable. They don't always remember that but definitely rely on it. Maybe you are just feeling empathy for their perspective and need to remind them somehow of your worth? If it is a harassment issue then a labor lawyer would be who you might consult. __________________ I Love You |

My husband and I once owned a small company with two employees in addition to ourselves. One was the bookkeeper and the other was a former student of mine we trained to do maintenance and basic repairs on the machines we serviced. We were the three musketeers. The bookkeeper was well paid. It was not personal or intended to hurt her and I don't know if she was aware of how we felt or not. If so, she never complained about it.
I'm not saying it's okay. I'm saying it evolves. __________________ You're only given one little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it. ~ Robin Williams Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage? ~ Pink Floyd |
