I started working about 18 moths ago as a peer support worker on a telephone mental health support line. I was hired on a very part time basis - working 2 to 3 four hour shifts a week. It was typically 2 shifts one week, and 3 the next.

We've recently expanded our services to include a new 1-800 number that runs for 8 hours and I've started working on it. I actually like the 8 hour shifts.

So I told the woman who does the scheduling that ideally I'd like to work 20 - 24 hours a week which is a big increase, and she said she could accommodate me. I just got the May schedule and that's what I'm scheduled for. I'm looking forward to the challenge but also am a little worried about how I'll handle it as the work can be emotionally intense.

Guess I'll just have to see how the month goes.

I hope the additional stress of that work will not be too much of a burden to bear. It is great that you do this kind of work. I really admire you!
