I finally found a job! Unfortunately it’s a p/t one but the hours are set.

The problem is that the attendance policy is very strict. I can only call in sick 15 days in one year.

Each time I’ll need to provide a doctors note. Also, I tried to change my orientation date & the manager who I contacyed got upset & implied that they’d find someone else to replace me if I can’t start right away.

He said that he had to resubmit my driving record & he was obviously irritated as he used my last name instead of my first name to address me.

He ignored my last email. He asked me to cancel the rescheduled orientation & I said that I couldn’t & I asked him how to do that.

I knew that he was already unprofessional as he flaked on our first Zoom interview. I emailed him to see what happened & he apologized for things.. He said that he was busy moving.

I scheduled an interview with another manager. I don’t know if he’ll be my supervisor or not.

Also, I’m upset that this disabled guy who was going to supposedly hire me to come over one day a week to help him type letters blocked me.

He was playing games with me as he kept telling me to call him back as he wasn’t sure of his schedule yet.

He told me to call him today & he clearly stated that he’d have me come over for 2 hours but that I woukd need to call him before I come over as it takes him a long time to get ready.

I’m upset at being lied to. Why couldn’t he have just told me that he found someone else or just not take my calls instead offering me lame excuses?

Why do some employers treat potential employees insuch a rude & disrespectful manner? It’s extremely unprofessional behavior.

Idk if I’ll be able to handle this new job if this is what they’re attitude is going to be like. I wish that I wasn’t so desperate for money.

Has anyone else bern treated like garbage & dismissed by potential or current employers too?

15 sick days is very generous policy especially for a part time position. It’s not strict. Doctor note though is a bit much especially if they don’t provide health care. How would they expect you to pay for appointments? Could you ask for details re doctors note?

I can’t say I was ever treated like garbage but I had some bad bosses. Honestly if you need a job in a hurry, you will have to put up with some nonsense if don’t have too many options. I’d give a try.

It is to much. Maybe if you’re out sick for awhile m, it
d be reasonable, but not for a day.

I don’t think that any health insurance is offered for p/t employees.

I will ask them about that at orientation. Hopefully the written policy is different from their actual policy.

The manager still ignored my last email & it’s bern 2 days. The fact thst he said he’d look for someone else if I couldn’t start right away is a major red flag to me.

It’s a non issue re bad bosses. We all had some annoying bosses. You can’t avoid it. I don’t have experience with me being singled out. Some bosses are just bad in general. The one I have now just useless. He doesn’t know much and is never available.

No I don’t believe they provide health care for part time employees. I was just saying it’s dumb they expect you to bring doctor’s note for every sick day yet you don’t have insurance. Hhhmm unrealistic .

I’d not want a job where I must provide doctors note every time I need to take a day.

Do you have an actual written job offer, with a specific start date? Because from my perspective if I don't have that, then I don't have the job. Asking you to coordinate your own orientation is just weird to me.

I've had a couple of potential jobs, be weird with me, and jerk me around like it sounds they are doing with you. In one case it was a question of the interviewer not having the actual authority to hire anyone and in the other the interview was uncomfortable with my request for flexible work hours but just didn't want to tell me that.

I get how stressful it is when we're desperate for work, but honestly if you don't have an offer letter, I'd simply get in touch with whoever offered you the job verbally, and say you're waiting for an offer letter spelling out salary and start date. If you get it great, if you don't get it, then you know they're not professional and you've probably dodged a bullet.

I think they did schedule orientation but Jesyka wanted to reschedule it and called manager about it.

Honestly in my experience the only time I was given written contract and I had to sign one were jobs that are more of a professional jobs. I worked variety of other jobs in my life and I never had any written contract given (for example retail or food service). Ever.

Jesyka what do you mean by “they seemed to get upset when you wanted to change your start date.”

They “seemed” upset to you or you know they were? What exactly did they say?

When they implied they’ll hire someone else, what do you mean by that? What did they say?” We will hire someone else”?

Is this like an official job where they pay you with a paycheck or direct deposit and send out a w2 and all that or is this more like "show up at least this many hours a day/week and I'll give you some cash" and you can get away without reporting it? Where did you find this job? Does the dude seem like a junkie?

If you're desperate and it is a way to for sure get some money and can be a stepping stone for a better position (which it sounds like it is), you might as well just tough it out and play the game as best you can until you can move on. If it's so sketchy you can't trust you'll get the hours and be paid for the hours, personally, I'd say fk that. But I'm pretty good at getting odd jobs especially during mowing or shoveling season. 15 sick days a year isn't the worst either, unless you get ridiculously sick for weeks at a time at some point or end up in the hospital for a couple weeks. One of my official jobs we couldn't take any time off without 2 weeks in advance and no sick days. If we didn't give the two week notice we would have to find somebody that had that day off to cover you, which would be difficult because we only got a weekly schedule... I never understood that, but ok.

I've also found a lot of jobs might discourage new employees because they want to kinda "test them" to see if they're willing to put up with any BS. Sorta let them know so the employee doesn't get surprised by any policies you say are red flags.

You can get a doctor's note without having an appointment a lot of the time if you just call and ask explaining you had some symptoms that didn't require an appointment but you need a note saying you're better (at least my nurse, doesn't even have to be a doc, did that for me a couple times a few years back).

If he got upset over the change in orientation, I'd say that would also be situational. If you agreed to a date and asked to change it, it could be saying to them that you might be an unreliable employee, but if you didn't set it in stone yet that's something different. And certain jobs that are hiring need employees ASAP especially if it's a small business that needs more employees than they have because someone left without notice for whatever reason, and will look for whoever can fill that position the quickest so they can get back to regular business.

It's ultimately up to you if you want to persue working there. Other jobs exist. Not saying they'll be any better, but they're there.

Sorry to hear about your past negative experiences. I actually did get an official offer. I signed a ton of paperwork & the salary was in writing too.

The manager confirmed my orientation date. Nit the weird guy, but another manager. That manager never returned my call.

I had to contact customer service & then he finally emailed me & asked me for my d.l, s.s & passport. I already submitted that info but I submitted everything again.

They seem quite disorganized there or they just don’t care about the employees.

Hopefully I won’t need to chase down the managers everytime I need to get in touch with them.

I wouldn’t have accepted this job if I wasn’t desperate for money, ugh. No one else wanted to hire me. They’re short staffed so I got lucky in a way.

That’s right. The manager threatened to rescind the job offer if I couldn’t start working there asap. Ugh! So I reluctantly agreed to start there sooner.

They are short staffed now. I signed a ton of paperwork for a delivery driver position. The good thing is that my pay is in writing as well as instructions on how to handle the food & the orders as well as how to input tips too & how to fill put the customer forms & receipts. That’s good to know as I’m forgetful, lol.

The jist of the email was:

We’ll have to find other canidates if you can’t start working right away. You’ll need to resubmit your application then & we’ll see if any positions ate still open then. They couldn’t wait another week for me to start as they’re short staffed now,

So I kept the original orientation date. I need this job unfortunately as no one else is interested in hiring me.

Then he made me reconfirm my availability in another enail. Ugh! Then he ignored me when I askrd him iabout my orientation date as I never got an email confirmation . He told me to cancel the rescheduled orientation but I couldn’t do it.

He’s in the middle of moving now, but that’s still no excuse to be unprofessional.

I’ll be getting paid with direct deposit. I had to use out banks routing number. Of course I’ll open up my own account soon. I don’t trust my husband at sall. I’ll set up a checking account to pay off my credit card bills slowly.

It’s for a regular job working p/t 20’hoursca week with a set schedule.

Thsnks for the tip about the note. He seemed annoyed at me as he used my last name to address me in the new emails instead of my first name.

He then ignored my email asking him about the orientation. I didn’t get a confirmation email so I contacted another manager & after a nice customer service employee there helped me out, that manager finally confirmed things wiih me. Weird!

I once got a new job and I had to put two weeks notice at my old job but potential employer told me they need me back in a week, they’d not wait two weeks. Luckily my previous place agreed to let me go.

When they need you, they need you. So I could see how they could say if you can’t start, they’ll look for someone else
