First of all, Happy 4th if July everyone. I was promised f/t hours at my new care taking job do that I could get benefits. Now I feel that I was lied to.
I also don’t like the fact that they company didn’t bother fixing the a/c at one group home for 4 years! My client told me that We were all sweating even with the fans on inside the house. The first month there I worked 4 days a week & 8 hours a day. So I was working 32 hours a week. This month they only scheduled me for 2 days a week working 8 hours a day, so that’s only 16 hours!!! I told them that I needed more hours & they said thst they’d try to give me more hours. They did, but it sounds like it’s temporary. I got a double shift one day so I immediately went to see another client afterwards & worked 16 hours in one day!!! Then I got 3 last minute shifts on top of that including a shift for today on the 4th, my birthday. I will unfortunately be working most of the day today because I need the money badly. I’ll be making overtime pay at least. I’m upset that I was lied to. They hured a bunch of new people lately. I heard that they cut other people’s hours too. I don’t understand why they’d hire so many new people when they don’t gave enough hours for everyone. Weird! I saw at least 4-5 new people recently. Why would they do that? The job is good for me otherwise except for having to deal with a few loud clients & coworkers at times. One client is a bit difficult as she normally doesn’t respond to me when I try talking to her. I also was not hsppt about getting clients whose home snrlked like cat piss. There was cat poo on the floor too, disgusting. I had to spend the day in my car like everyone else does since the smell was so strong. Thank goodness for a/c!!! Other than that, it’s relatively stress free. |

HBD, first of all... hope you do something nice after your shift.
Sorry they're cutting your hours, yet have hired more people and have also cut other people's hours. It sounds like they don't want full-time employees, so that they do not have to pay benefits. Also, it's not right that they did fix the AC for 4 years now. I'd send out resume's elsewhere to hedge your bets. |

It isn’t right that they made a promise to me then they ended up cutting my hours! Why couldn’t they just tell me that f/t hours aren’t available instead of lying to me? I was already hired at that point. Obviously they had hours to give me temporarily. I made it clear that I needed benefits. I’m pretty upset about this. It’s extremely difficult for me to find any job, so sadly I need to keep this job as it pays above minimum wage too & it’s super easy & relatively stress free too. |

They don’t want to pay benefits so they don’t give people consistent full time schedule. They might give it for a few weeks like they did with you. It’s common to hire bunch of part time people to work a few hours rather than a few full time employees. Also most part time positions cannot guarantee number of hours. It fluctuates.
If you want job with benefits, you need to only accept full time job with benefits. I don’t recommend taking on part time job with hopes for more hours and benefits. It’s typically too unstable. |

He should’ve never said tyat if he couldn’t give me any f/t hours. A coworker said to apply for other companies that will probably give me more hours. He knew that I needed benefits. So to go from 32 hours to 16 is shocking. I had 32 hours for a month each week. A coworker yesterday thinks my hours might’ve been cut since I requested 3 days off this month. I got the days off. I couldn’t get out of a prior commitment that I agreed to before I got this job. Hopefully they don’t think that I’m unreliable now. I was always on time, never had any complaints tgat I’m aware of from anyone, etc… I like this job for the most part as it’s easy & almost stress free, so I’ll keep it. Most companies (especially for service type jobs) won’t hire f/t employees let alone offer any benefits aside from an insulting 10-15% off employee discount at most places. |

As the other folks have written, the employers hire many part time employees in order to avoid paying benefits.
What I'd like to add is this: The situation was like this more than forty years ago! The big difference today is that workers have social media with which to organize and communicate about this shady practice. Also I'd encourage you to get promises in writing, and contact your state and federal representative and senator about any trouble you're having. __________________ Major Depressive Disorder; Sleep Apnea; possibly on the spectrum Nuvigil 50mg; Effexor 37.5mg Wellbutrin 150mg; meds for blood pressure & cholesterol |

It sounds that they were dishonest. There’s no way for us to know why. Sadly, you’ll run into these kind of employers.
I don’t know if I agree that employers don’t hire full time. Most people I know only ever work full time because they need income and benefits. Part time is only sustainable as a supplemental income. If you need full time job with benefits only look for that. What you see is what you get. Doesn’t matter what they promise. Only go with what’s being given to you today and in writing |

I feel like I was lied to. They shouldn’t say that if they can’t actually give me f/t hours. |

It’s upsetting! I was temporarily given f/t hours & one day I did a double shift & got overtime hours. I don’t anticipate being that happening to often then. This company is probably very cheap as they didn’t bother to fix the a/c at one clients house. It is hot as hell at the house. The fans don’t help much. They didn’t fix the a/c for 4 years! Ridiculous! It’s impossible to get f/t hours with benefits at the jobs that I worked at & in the service & retail industry in general. Unless you’re in management, it’s not gonna happen as most companies are cheap. Most places don’t want to give employees benefits unfortunately. It seems like people need to have an extremely high level job like that of an engineer or some kind of managerial position in order to get good pay, f/t hours & benefits. Companies exploit easily expendable service workers like me all the time & it sucks! I do like this job as it’s easy & low stress & no one bullies or harasses me, so that’s the good thing about this job at least. I might need to get a second job doon as working 16 hours a week is a joke! I did temporarily get more hours, but it might just be temporary, idk. I don’t trust management anymore even though they say they’ll work on getting me more hours. |

I understand why you’re annoyed, it sounds like you were misled about the hours. Did the original advert specify full time hours? Do you have anything in writing with full time hours written?
If it was a verbal promise unfortunately I don’t think there’s anything you can do about it. If they did mislead you it may be that they really needed workers to start right away and said anything they thought would get them. Just my guess. |

I was probably lied to in order to keep me around. I know that they can give me more hours as I did get a double shift last week & f/t hours this week after I asked for more hours. Next week I’ll still only get 16 hours! What a joke! This company is messed up as one guy I talked to yesterday didn’t get oaid for 4 weeks via direct deposit! Other coworkers said Christmas pay was delayed for a week. Ridiculous! And they must need people badly as 3 employees who were my releif arrived anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour late! Wth? One guy was usually late but he got fired recently to my releif. |

I see. Maybe this is something you can look as a stepping stone while you get more applications out there? If you’re only on 16 hours hopefully you’ll be able to get to interviews in your free time.

If you think they are violating any labor laws, please reach out to the office of one of your state legislators or your state's department of labor. Also, document anything that might be relevant to your complaints. Most places now consider 32-36 hours to be full time for hourly positions. 40 hours would be overtime.

Today I was told that NO regular hours are available now. For now, only on call hours are available. I suspect that they cut my hours for complaining about some things like how much this one house smells. I was told that this is temporary but I have a bad feeling about things. We just got some new clients but my manager said it’ll take time to get things in order. A code enforcer came out to one of the houses the other day but he wasn’t allowed inside. He was told to call the manager. |
