An organization has given me a chance. I finally got a job after 18 months. Now I am doing on-boarding. There are a lot of documents to read and sign. My first day is September 3rd.

I should be happy about this new job. Instead I am terrified. My fragile mental health is making me doubt myself even though I worked full-time in the past.

Right now I want to keep being lazy and hidden. I don’t want responsibility. This offer would have been better for me if it came 4 to 8 weeks later, since I just started medication two weeks ago. -- Friends have noticed an improvement in my mental health but I am still experiencing ‘symptoms’.

ODSP told me they would not cut me off, which I was very worried about, since I will have one month that I will make too much for assistance. The initial training is 6 weeks at 37.5 hours/week. After that I will have casual employee status, so I cannot lose the income assistance.

Hi @The_little_didgee - congrats on the job. Hope the symptoms diminish. I find that physical exercise like 5 minute Tai Chi on youtube helps me reenergize. You are lucky not to get cut off from assistanct. Good luck.

I really wish I knew what to say that would help—I know how hard it is. I’ve almost always been scared starting a new job, especially when I re-entered the workforce after being underemployed 2-3 years and unemployed for 5. Good for you for trying and congratulations for getting it. I wish you well! Keep us posted.

Congratulations. I'm very happy for you. I hope it turns out to be a great job.

I'm glad ODSP isn't cutting you off completely. My experience with them is they are actually pretty good about working with people who are working.


You can also apply for the $500 employment startup benefit which can help with things like clothes for work or other startup employment expenses. You can get it up to once per calendar year. I've never had any problem getting it.

Thank you for all the replies.

I have never tried Tai Chi. Two weeks ago I saw a man doing it by the river near my place. He seemed to be enjoying himself. It did look like a calming activity.

Starting a new job always triggers my anxiety. The change, new people and schedule is quite disruptive to my life. Right now there isn’t much going on to motivate me to get back on a regular sleep-wake schedule. I guess I have an excuse now, but I will wait another week. – I'm that lazy right now.

I know I have to look after myself and make sure I sleep and eat. I have a good network of friends and an employment counsellor who can help if any issues surface.

The employment agency I signed up with has been helping me navigate all the documentation, etc… There is a lot. Some off it is hard to understand. They are even helping with ODSP. My employment counsellor managed to get through to my case worker on Friday. I tried but couldn’t get through. We are going to apply for $250.00 out of the $500.00 ESUB.
