Seems the ax is falling everywhere these days, and today it fell on me.
I can find a little silver lining in this. My job was doing NOTHING for me on a personal level, and I felt like a drone. So maybe this is an opportunity to take a hard look at my career and ask what has been missing. But man, I'm gonna miss those paychecks. There's no such thing as a convenient time to get laid off...but this is a REALLY inconvenient time. Tons of bills, family of four to support. I am already skedaddling to the job sites, LinkedIn, etc....but this could still take a long time.... I know I am lucky in that my parents could (probably) afford to help me out if things got really bad. But jeez, I'm in my forties, I really thought I had it all together by now! I hate to hit up mom & dad at this stage. I guess it's better to feel humiliated than have the family out on the street, though. |

I was just given an informal ninety day notice that my job was ending as well, my last day is June 30, but I am not going to wait it out. I have had one interview already and one app under review at the Consumer Protection Agency.
my best to you slothrop, and go luck job hunting TJ |

I'm so sorry. I know a few personally who have been laid off, and it's tough out there. I have been looking for office work forever it seems, and have found nothing besides a couple of retail jobs to pay some bills.
I wish you the best, and don't worry - I'm 37 and have had to get help from my father. It is sometimes humiliating, but I'm glad he's there to help me financially and without judgment.

Back in pre-911 days I remember the big layoff then and being one of many getting cut. It's ironic because the job I was laid off from in 2001 I got back in 2007 and once again we have had to have layoffs. This time I have been blessed to get to keep mine, however it was hard watching so many being walked out the door in to a world where millions of others are fighting for survival for lack of a better word.
Don't think of it as humiliation if you have to go to your parents (even in your forties). Just be encouraged that you do have someone to turn to. Many have been too ashamed or prideful to humble themselves and take a step in that direction. But you remind me of a friend who was just laid off. She too felt she was going nowhere and when they walked her out she said it was like a weight was lifted. She knew she did not have to will to let go and move on with her life. She was too content and comfortable. But I hope you are able to grab onto what you need and make it work...stay golden and keep kickin... <don't forget "indeed.com" too>

That's great to have that much notice...I wish my company had done that for me! I think you are doing the right thing by interviewing.

I did have that sense of a weight being lifted when my company told me I was laid off. It's like, suddenly there were all these complicated little business problems that just went away and became someone else's. I hope this leads me to something better, not just something different.
