TPND, I do
not recommend trying to wait it out! If it's a tooth abscess or other infection, it's likely to get worse before it gets better. The dentists I know treat such things as emergencies and will try to fit in patients on the same day, if only to examine them and get them started on antibiotics. If what you have turns out to require a tooth extraction or other surgery, you might have to live with it for a week or so anyway while the antibiotics take hold.
In case you haven't guessed I've been there and done that, though mine weren't as bad as yours sounds. Other friends, though, have had it even worse.
