I've been on both sides of this. I've been the attacked, and the attacker. I can tell you that as the attacked, I feel your pain. It's hard to understand why someone who clames to care about you would be so hurtfull.
As someone who was the attacker to at least one friend that I can think of (I'm sure there are a few others), I can say I was usually comprimized by substance abuse, and usually hurting very badly. The meaner the things I said, the more it meant I cared and felt hurt/rejected by that person.
I'm sorry you're going through this and I hope it doesn't continue to hurt and upset you.
