What do you do when someone purposely triggers you? Today I had a "friend" trigger me today. When I said that I was going into a panic they continued in the same manner. I have removed this person from my facebook and will be deleting all emails. The worst part of this is this person has BPD and anxiety and still pushed things knowing how upset I was getting. Jerk!

Maybe your friend is unwell at the moment with their own illness?

It is possible that your friend may have his/her own issues going on right now and that is causing them to lash out in this way. I think it is safe to take a break from this person to evaluate how healthy this relationship is for you at this time in your recovery. Considering that this person also has BPD makes me think this may deserve a second chance. There is too little detail here for me to fully judge if their reaction was truly out of whack for a friend or not. Best of luck...I think it's perfectly healthy to remove yourself from the situation until you feel otherwise.

Aphrodites Muse's post is pretty spot-on to me. But if for any reason you do forgive this person, and something close to this happens again, I would end it. Friends are supposed to be there for eachother, and if this person makes your worse, it's better not to have this person in your life at all.

I don't know if this will be helpful but a friend of mine who also has BPD used to trigger me on purpose with all kinds of petty things. I now realize that even though he was doing it all wrong he was actually trying to help me. He thought that if he would trigger me often enough I eventually wouldn't react anymore... I've forgiven him and he's still my best friend.

I've been on both sides of this. I've been the attacked, and the attacker. I can tell you that as the attacked, I feel your pain. It's hard to understand why someone who clames to care about you would be so hurtfull. As someone who was the attacker to at least one friend that I can think of (I'm sure there are a few others), I can say I was usually comprimized by substance abuse, and usually hurting very badly. The meaner the things I said, the more it meant I cared and felt hurt/rejected by that person. I'm sorry you're going through this and I hope it doesn't continue to hurt and upset you. |

OK, more details. I have an irrational fear of mice. If I see one I get hysterical. My husband knowing this let me know we had a mouse in our house so that I could be prepared. I told my friend that I was terrified of mice and he decided it was a good idea to describe all the parts in great detail. As he was doing that I was going into a bigger and bigger panic attack. I was sobbing before he stopped. I kept telling him to shut up and he thought I was joking. I could not leave the sofa all day, not to go to the bathroom, not to get lunch (and I am diabetic so missing meals is bad). I was stuck there from 11 am to 5 pm shaking and crying. And then last night had more panic attacks when we were out.
The friendship was pretty one-sided, I would talk him down from cutting or from a rage, I would listen to him but when I needed someone to listen to me he was never there. He would always turn it back to him. Definitely not a healthy friendship.

Sean dealt with two mice and they were gone this morning. Sean also said he would take care of cleaning up after the mice. Still kind of freaked out but we are pretty sure there was just the two of them. I did throw out a bunch of food that I just wasn't sure about. I think I will sleep better tonight then I did last night.
