I think that the onset of building codes, marked the beginning of the end for homes that only had a couple of electrical sockets, the wiring behind which really wasn't designed to handle the current of much more than a single small device. I can actually remember those adapters that you'd plug into a light fitting before the bulb, to run an extension off...
