My T was going through a hard time in her own life and kept losing my checks :-) Maybe your T is having a hard time in his own life or is working too hard, etc.

I like the idea of feeling he subconsciously wanted you there last week and that he was "shocked" to find someone else in your spot this week and called you when he saw that I'd go with telling myself that story.
