I've learned to practice this philosophy after hearing it in the rooms of AA. Life does not always comply with what i want but it does give me what i need. (they say "be careful what you pray for".) there were times before sobriety that i felt persecuted by life. it turns out that it was my perspective that was skewed. accepting life's challenges by turning them into opportunities has changed my way of thinking and way of living. i'm not perfect in all this but it's "progress not perfection" i strive for. here's an excerpt from an article i read today Quote:
__________________ Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won. It exists, it is real, it is possible, it is yours..~Ayn Rand Last edited by madisgram; Jun 13, 2012 at 11:01 AM.. |

Thank you Madisgram for this-- I think this can apply to a lot in life
It is a good reminder, or at least for myself it is. __________________ "A laugh is worth a hundred groans in any market." Charles Lamb

This is great for everyone -- not just alcoholics. I know when I first got sober, I didn't have a clue how to "live life on life's terms." Living day to day is what I had trouble with. The little daily "challenges" are what tripped me up. I could handle ANY crisis - those didn't bother me. But not the day to day stuff. I was just like my mother -- I had to drink to get thru each day.
I found I was inviting misery, and it seemed I preferred it that way. At least I thought so - until I joined AA and they showed me I didn't have to live that way. I didn't know I had choices before - - sounds unbelievable, but it's true. Even after all these years, I still strive for progress. I have much to learn. Thanks for the post Madisgram. And I AM careful what I pray for! |

Great post Madisgram . I'm 88 days Sober today and have been attending AA meetings three times a week. I can agree that my AA life has made me look at so many things differently. I have so much to learn still. I've only really started working the steps. (I'm on step two now). But I'm happy about this jounrey. For a long time I would just drink everything away because I was afraid. So being drunk was my armor to shield me from life and the pain life bought me. It took me a very long time to admit that I had a serious problem. I started young and when I lost full control I had to be between 19-21, so I told myself who didn't drink at that age. Now that I'm honest (thanks to AA), I know I was an Alcoholic from the day I picked up (15yrs old). Well anyway I rambled a bit, sorry . I loved the quote you posted above.
"Life is about living, loving, learning and of course laughter. Living life on life’s terms has much to do about our attitude toward our life. Do we choose a positive attitude or invite misery? Do we choose change or stay in our old comfort zones even if they are unhealthy for us? What thoughts do we hold and keep our attention on? Yes, we have the choice at any moment to make changes in our life if it’s not working for us. Our life is all about change and choice. Within each of us is the ability to create and live the life intended for us. We only need make the changes and choices that are truthful, honest and right for our own life. As we learn to accept changes that come about and learn new skills to walk through change, we have the opportunity to create and live a life of love, peace, serenity and happiness" Thanks for sharing!! And hope all is well __________________ "Religion is for people who are afraid they'll go to hell. Spirituality is for people who have been there." "Accept Life on Life's terms" |
